Career/Program Overview

RCTC’s Digital Arts program prepares students for opportunities as digital artists, graphic designers, interactive designers, and web designers. The program focuses on artistic creation using traditional and electronic medium. It consists of a common liberal arts core and offers three areas of specific programs of study including: Computer Art and Design, Multimedia, and Web Design. Curriculum-at-a-Glance

Depending on which program/degree option selected, coursework may include: Drawing, Basic Design, Photography, Computer as a Creative Media, Graphic Design I and II, Typography, Computer Graphics I and II, Art and Design Projects, Animation and 3D Modeling, Interactive Web Design I and II, and Motion Graphics I and II.

Program/Degree Options

RCTC’s Digital Arts program offers several different areas of emphasis and degree options. These options include

Computer Art & Design, Associate in Science Degree Program

Multimedia, Associate in Science Degree Program

Web Design and Development, Associate in Science Degree Program (offered completely on-line)

Computer Graphics, Certificate Program (also offered completely on-line)

Graphic Design, Certificate Program

Multimedia Technology, Certificate Program

Program Start Date(s)

Programs can be started when courses start at the beginning of any semester. Some courses may be offered only once a year. Check the RCTC catalog for course availability by semester. Consult your academic advisor for your program of study.

Career Opportunities/Information

Digital Artists are versatile creators of computer illustrations, photographic illustrations, and rich graphical elements. Most of a Digital Artist’s day is spent on developing a project, drawing

pictures, or assembling artwork. They provide content to graphic designers, web designers, and interactive designers to

create a rich experience. Digital Artists also exhibit their work in galleries and installations.

Graphic Designers combine text and graphics in order to communicate a message. Most of a Graphic Designer’s day is spent researching their client’s needs, sketching solutions to problems, or creating designs for logos, layouts, and environments. They provide solutions to their client’s problems in order to communication a message to an audience. Graphic Designers can work at design firms, advertising agencies, in an in-house design department, or as freelancers.

Interactive Designers combine text, graphics, animation, video, sound, and user input to create a rich environment and experience for the user. Most of an Interactive Designer’s day is spent researching a project, creating storyboards, animating content, and developing interactivity. They provide users with content-filled experiences that change with user input. Interactive Designers often work at a design agency, as a freelance designer, or exhibit their work in galleries.

Web Designers combine text, graphics, and usability to create functional and compelling web sites for their clients. Most of a Web Designer’s day is spent researching client’s needs, testing the usability of a web site, developing design solutions for web sites, or implementing web sites. They provide clients with a functional web site that communicates the messages the client intends, in the easiest manner possible. Web Designers often work at a design agency, in an in-house design department, or as freelancers.

Articulations/Accreditations

Articulation agreements for both the Digital Arts: Computer Art & Design, Associate in Science Degree Program and Digital Arts: Multimedia, Associate in Science Degree Program has been established between RCTC and Capella University and Bemidji State University
