RENEWAL ACTIVITY COMPETENCIES

A staff member holding a full-time, five-year license is eligible for five-year renewal of the license after meeting the requirements. The requirements must be met during the five-year period preceding the license expiration date.

  1. Completion of 108 renewal units.
  2. Recommendation for relicensure by the committee serving licensed staff.
  3. Verification by the authorized administrator that the applicant has employment or an offer of employment for a position in one (1) or more of the license field(s) listed on the current license.

Considering the extreme importance of the teaching role and the mission of technical education, it is imperative that continuing education hours do actually contribute to teaching competency, rather than focusing on personal interest or other professional responsibilities that are worthy, but not focused on maintaining currency in each licensure field held.

An applicant applying for relicensure in more than one license field is required to earn a total of 108 renewal units in all of these licenses [not 108 hours for each license], and must have been actively employed in that license field within the past five (5) years.

For a license held in a license field in which the faculty member has not been actively employed within the past five (5) years, an additional 54 renewal units are required for each license for which renewal is requested. Note: these additional renewal units are in addition to the 108 units for fields in which the faculty member has been actively employed. These additional 54 renewal units for each license field for which renewal is requested must be selected from the appropriate license renewal activity categories listed in the "Occupational Competency" area in the Renewal Activity Competencies chart.

An applicant for renewal who earns approved renewal units in excess of the number required for renewal cannot apply extra hours to future renewals.

Pre-Approval and Final Approval of Renewal Units

Pre-approval of renewal units is only required if noted on the Renewal Activity Competencies Chart. When required, the applicant must submit the Post-Secondary Relicensing Approval Form for pre-approval of the Relicensure Committee prior to participation in the activity. The Relicensure Committee will act on requests and return the forms to the applicant, who retains the endorsed pre-approval forms to be submitted for final approval after participation in the activity.

The form requesting pre-approval must include learning objectives stating new competencies to be developed. See the section on Committee Meetings regarding the procedure for emergency pre-approval and final approval during periods when the committee is not meeting regularly.

Before the Relicensure Committee will grant final approval of renewal units, evidence must be provided to the committee that the applicant has satisfactorily completed the experience. Evidence that will be accepted is given in the Renewal Activity Competencies section.
