Academic/Transfer Advisor

 

 

Position Purpose and Responsibilities

 

To assist Student Support Services/TRiO students desiring to earn certificates and/or associate degrees at RCTC as well as providing specific assistance to students wanting to transfer from RCTC to four-year colleges and universities; both by providing a variety of advising functions.  To document student contacts, provide input on the Program’s operation and other duties as requested by the Program director.

 

Ø  Assess student academic skills in relation to appropriate course placement.

·         Evaluate placement test results of students.

·         Establish academic plan for students.

·         Monitor student course selection and progress.

·         Assist director in collection of data on student progress for required reports.

 

Ø  Advise students in academic areas.

·         Assist students with goal setting and career planning.

·         Assist students with semester class selection.

·         Monitor and document academic achievement and retention.

·         Assist students with financial aid applications and monitor aid assistance.

 

Ø  Provide personal support services to SSS participants.

·         Present workshops on a variety of topics i.e.; stress management, time management and interpersonal skills.

·         Serve as a role model to enhance the personal and professional success of first-generation and low-income students.

·         Encourage student participation in cultural enrichment activities.

·         Refer students to appropriate campus and community resources.

 

Ø  Assist in the transfer process for program participants.

·         Conduct transfer workshops.

·         Lead tours to transfer universities/colleges.

·         Assist students with transfer planning.

 

Qualifications

 

The successful candidate must demonstrate that s/he possesses the following qualifications:

§  Bachelor’s degree in education, social science, counseling or related field required.

§  Two years experience in education, counseling/advising or related field, and in working with at-risk student populations is required.

§  Two years experience with post-secondary educational systems.

§  Ability to initiate, organize, and carry out workshops and informational sessions.

§  Strong problem-solving skills are required for assessing students and making recommendations based upon assessments.

§  Excellent communications skills are needed for working with faculty, staff and students.

§  Ability to work independently as well as an effective team member is essential.

§  Experience in overcoming educational barriers similar to those confronting the project’s target population.

 

Employment Considerations

 

This is a seasonal, full-time, grant-funded, unclassified professional position in the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE) bargaining unit.  Beginning annual salary is dependent on qualifications and experience; position has excellent fringe benefits.

What is SSS/TRiO?

The Student Support Services Program is one of eight TRiO non-profit programs authorized by the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008.  The Rochester Community and Technical College SSS Program is designed to serve low-income, first-generation or disabled college students in order to increase retention and graduation rates, increase transfer rates from two- to four-year institutions, and to foster a climate supportive of the success of Program students.  Among other services, SSS/TRiO provides academic advising, assistance in obtaining financial aid, assistance in basic skills and study skills, and peer tutoring.  Students enrolled in RCTC who are from low-income families or who are first-generation college students or who have a disability are eligible for participation.  The RCTC Student Support Services Program currently serves approximately 250 students.  The Program is wholly funded by the US Department of Education; funding is $403,495 for the ’09-’10 academic year.  Continued employment is contingent upon sustained funding of the Program by the federal government.
