BLOODEBORNE INFECTIOUS DISEASE POLICY
(RCTC Policy 6.4.4)
Part 1. Definition: Rochester Community
and Technical College implements bloodborne infectious disease policies
and procedures to provide a safe environment for students, faculty,
staff, and patients of the College health care services.
Rochester Community and Technical College does not discriminate on
the basis of infectious disease status for admission to the College
or for employment by the College.
Part 2. Procedure:
1. The policy for bloodborne infectious diseases will be documented
in the College catalog and all other College documents that cite College
policies.
2. Students entering health care programs will be asked to provide
documentation of a health exam using the RCTC Health Form. This confidential
documentation will be reviewed by the College Health Service Office.
A student health file will be kept in the College Health Service Office.
3. All students, staff, and faculty that are at risk for exposure
to bloodborne infectious pathogens must complete the Hepatitis B Vaccine
series or sign a waiver documenting the reason for not receiving the
vaccine. To document compliance, the student/faculty/staff member
must complete and submit a “Hepatitis B Vaccination Verification”
form. Submission will be to the office designated on the form.
4. A “Standard Precautions” policy will be implemented
throughout the College for use by all students, faculty, and staff.
5. A program with course content that presents a potential risk of
exposure to infectious diseases must provide those students with training
in infectious disease prevention. Documentation of this training will
be the responsibility of the program leader, with a copy of the documentation
given to the College Safety Officer.
6. All students participating in college athletic programs will be
trained in bloodborne infectious disease prevention. Documentation
of this training will be the responsibility of each athletic program,
with a copy of the documentation given to the College Safety Officer.
7. All laboratories, clinics, and athletic facilities will be equipped
with bloodborne infectious disease spill kits and will be provided
instruction for their use.
8. All College faculty and staff will receive annual training regarding
bloodborne infectious diseases through the college “Right to
Know” training program. Documentation of the training will be
maintained by the College Safety Officer.
