"The next ten years in the college's history would signal the beginnings of the University Center Rochester as a unique and innovative partnership and campus along with intensified debate over merger of community and technical colleges."

In 1992 Dr. Karen Nagle became RCC’s 7th leader. 


Dr. Geraldine Evans left RCC to become the Chancellor of the Minnesota Community College System.  



Mary Goette retires.  She came to the college in 1946 and served as the faculty leader 4 times. She was the first faculty member to obtain a PhD.




In 1987 the technical institute opened a 70,000 square foot addition.

Ground was broken May 24, 1991 for the University Center Rochester. 



The new $17 million dollar University Center Rochester facility opens in 1993.



Rochester AVTI changed names three times in a span of 4 years from 1987 to 1991, from Rochester Technical Institute, Rochester Technical College and finally Minnesota Riverland Technical College.

In 1991 Rochester Technical College merged with Austin and Faribault Technical College’s to become Minnesota Riverland Technical College in 1991. Marlin Wacholz is named president of the regional technical college.



In 1991 the Minnesota Legislature passed the mega merger bill that would create the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.

Cy Champa retires as head football coach after the 1985 season and is replaced by longtime assistant Steve Kereakos.  Champa guided the Yellowjackets to six state championships and 17 division titles. He took the team to seven bowls and coached 39 All-Americans.  In 2001 he would become the college’s second NJCAA Hall of Fame coach. 

Traci Robinson would hold RCC’s all-time leading score in women's basketball with 990 points.
