The Rochester Community and Technical College wresting program has a long tradition of producing All-American people on and off the mat. It is a great place to start an academic/athletic career. For some it is a final destination, but for many others it is simply a starting point for the future.

Yellowjacket Pin Loss on Itasca Community College 32-12!!!

The RCTC Yellowjackets wrestled their first MCAC dual against Itasca Community College on Wednesday night.  The Yellowjackets were victorious in seven of the ten weights, and won by a score of 32-12.  Conditioning was a key factor in the team victory.  RCTC next completion will be on January 17^th at 6:00pm against Augsburg College white team.

RCTC Yellowjackets Back in Action!!!

The Rochester Community and Technical Yellowjackets were back in action at the Ridgewater Open held in Willmar on January 7^th.  The Jackets continued to wrestle well with seven wrestlers placing in the top six.

Logan Barrett (Owatonna, MN) placed 2^nd at 197 pounds.  On his way to the finals Barrett picked up a pin over Taylor Brown of Concordia, a pin over Osinachi Nwachukwu of Minot, and a 7-5 decision over Wade Weppler of Minot.  In the finals Barrett lost a 7-2 decision to Chris Brassell of Saint Cloud State.

Jered Kemp (Palmer, AK) and Dillon Solberg (Wahpeton, ND) each placed 3^rd.  Nate Larson (Sioux Falls, SD) went 4-1 on the day and placed 5^th. 

Also picking up wins for the Yellowjackets were:  Tyler Jackson (Mazeppa, MN), Shelby Deno (Kasson, MN), and Jordan Arndt (Zumbrota, MN).

Jackets Compete at 23^rd Annual Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open

This past weekend the RCTC Yellowjackets competed in the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open held at Augsburg College.  The tournament had over 350 wrestlers representing more than 25 different colleges.  The Jackets wrestled well placing eight of their wrestlers in the top six.

Logan Barrett (Owatonna, MN) went 4-0 and won the 197 Silver Division Bracket.  Barrett has a current record of 10-0 and has beaten Nationally Ranked opponents.

Holton Lubinski (Elk River, MN) also went 4-0 on the day and won the 157 Bronze Division Bracket.  “Holton dominated in every match and is beginning to wrestle to his ability.  I expect to see a lot more success from him in the future,” said Coach Rager.

Nate Larson (Sioux Falls, SD) went 3-1 and placed third in the 133 Silver Bracket.  Larson has placed in the top three at all of the tournaments this season.

Dakota Hanson (Kasson, MN) went 3-1 and placed third in the 141 Bronze Bracket. 

Also picking up wins on the day for the Yellowjackets were: Jered Kemp (Palmer, AK) 6^th, Juan Gomez (Chatfield, MN) 4^th, Jordan Arndt (Zumbrota, MN) 5^th, Jake Minske (Rochester, MN) 4^th.

The team has added a new competition to their schedule, and will be wrestling at Minnesota State, Moorhead on December 3^rd.  Wrestling starts at 9:00AM.

Yellowjackets Compete in Luther Open

This past weekend the RCTC Yellowjackets wrestled in Decorah, IA at the Luther College Open.  The open boasted over 200 competitors from 20 different teams, and included programs from the NCAA D-I, D-II, D-III, NAIA, and NJCAA.  The Jackets placed seven wrestlers in the top eight.

Leading the team was Shelby Deno (Kasson, MN) and Logan Barrett (Owatonna, MN).  While on his way to the 184 pound championship, Deno compiled a 3-0 record defeating Micah Ballew  of Luther 7-3, Grant Miller of UW-La Crosse 9-7, and in the championship Tony Piechowski UW-La Crosse 5-4.

At 197 pounds Logan Barrett also had a 3-0 day with wins over Steve Kleamenakis of Wartburg 11-3 and a pin in 6:23 over Mike Hale from NIACC.  In the finals Barrett defeated NJCAA Nationally Ranked #3 Jim Doyle of Iowa Lakes by a score of 5-4.  “Logan wrestled an extremely smart match.  He stayed in great position, and scored when the opportunity presented itself,” noted coach Rager. Barrett won with a final takedown in the closing moments of the third period.

Jake Minske (Rochester, MN) also had a notable performance placing 2^nd at HWT for the Jakets.  Minske went 3-1 on the day which included a win over NJCAA Nationally Ranked #2 Matt Wyss of Iowa Lakes.

Also picking up wins on the day for the Yellowjackets were: Jered Kemp (Palmer, AK) 5th, Nate Larson (Sioux Falls, SD) 3^rd, Dillon Solberg (Wahpeton, ND), Seth Johnson (Blooming Prairie, MN), Dakota Hanson (Kasson, MN), Tyler Jackson (Mazeppa, MN), Holton Lubinski (Elk River, MN) Juan Gomez (Chatfield, MN) 4^th, Blake Arndt (Hayfield, MN), Jake Leintz (Clear Lake, WI) 6^th.

“This is a tough tournament, and the guys wrestled great.  We will continue to work hard in the room and do the right things in the classroom.  I look forward to seeing this team excel this season,” said Coach Randy Rager.

The Yellowjackets travel to Augsburg College this weekend to compete in the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open.  Wrestling starts at 9:00 AM in the Augsburg athletic facility.          

Deno, Minske, and Barrett Win Titles at 2011 Yellowjacket Open!!!

The RCTC Yellowjacket wrestling team opened their season this past weekend at home in the 3rd annual Yellowjacket Open. The tournament attracted over 85 wrestlers from 10 different schools. The Yellowjackets had five wrestlers advance to the finals and several other wrestlers in the placing rounds.

At 184 for the Yellowjackets, Shelby Deno (Kasson, MN) went 3-0, which included a 15-4 major decision over Minnesota State-Moorhead Kody Kalkbrenner.

At 197 Logan Barrett (Owatonna, MN) wrestled fellow teammate Juan Gomez in the finals. Barrett won by a score of 2-1.

At HWT Jake Minske (Rochester, MN) recorded three falls on the day. In the finals Minske pinned number one seed Gerad Fugleberg of Minnesota State-Moorhead in 6:05.

Also wrestling in the finals for RCTC was Nate Larson (Souix Falls, SD). Larson lost a close 3-2 match to Javior Portillo in the finals.

Coach Rager was pleased with how the team performed: "this is a great tournament for our young guys to get matches and see the difference of what college wrestling is about. We have some things to work on and will look to improve for next week."

The Yellowjakcets travel to Decorah, IA this weekend and will compete in the Luther College Norse Open. Wrestling action starts at 9:00 AM.
