RCTC losses a Heartbreaker!!!!!!!!!
On January 9, 2010 RCTC traveled to Minneapolis to take on the MCTC Mavericks and lost 75-71 in Overtime. "Story of the game was rebounding," Head Coach Steve Hucke, "when you get out rebounded 70-42 and 32 offensive rebounds you aren't going to win many games!" RCTC had a hard time with MCTC's height but hung in there after being down 7 points before tying it up at 35 at the half. "Our kids fought hard but just digging holes," Hucke explained, "we just could not sustain once we had a lead in the second half." DECEMBER 2009
Maria Gangelhoff is MCAC Southern Division Player of the Week after leading RCTC to 3 wins over the semester break. She scored 20 points in their win on December 16, 32 points on December 29 and 17 points on December 30. She also grabbed 40 rebounds, highlighted by a 16 rebound effort against Untied Tribes Technical College on December 30. Gangelhoff, is a 5'8" Sophomore team Captain from Sleepy Eye St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye, MN.
RCTC holds United Tribes to 34 points less of their offensive average (88 points per game)
A great defensive effort limited United Tribes to 31% shooting, forced 28 turnovers and only allowed 5 3 pointers in RCTC's 68-54 win on December 30, 2009. "It was a great team defensive effort," Head Coach Steve Hucke stated, "we really kept their shooters off balance and out of sync." RCTC's defense would pick them up right after they crossed half court and would not let them get open for any open shots. "They shoot well from the 3 point arc and beyond," Hucke commented, "so we did not want them to get uncontested shots from 28 feet in." Maria Gangelhoff scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Yellowjackets to their 7th win in a row. They improved their record to 9-2 for the season. RCTC will open up MCAC action January 6, 2010 at home against Minnesota West out of Worthington.
Gangelhoff scores 32 points!
Maria Gangelhoff, 5' 8" SO, Sleepy Eye, St. Mary's, scored 32 points and had 7 rebounds in RCTC's win over Mesabi Range 82-60 on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 in the MCTC New Year Classic. "She really started off well and scored 17 of her points in the first half," Head Coach Steve Hucke, "when she is on early she is tough to defend." Brittni Mayer, 5'7" FR, Dover-Eyota, chipped 12 points, Jordan Vavra, 5'10", SO, Cambridge-Isanti, added 11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals, with Whitney Fick, 6'0" FR, Lake City, contributing with 10 points. "Our defensive pressure got to them," Hucke commented, "we forced 28 turnovers and only allowed them to shoot 33% from the field." RCTC has now won 6 games in a row and improve to 8-2. Wednesday, December 30, 2009 they travel back to MCTC to play United Tribes Technical College, from Bismarck, ND, an NJCAA DII school at Noon. "They live and die by the 3 point shot so we will have to be ready to defend that shot," Hucke also stated, "it should be an exciting game."
RCTC Women have now won their last 5 games in a row after defeating WTC on December 16, 2009 89-36. "We have been playing better as of late," Head Coach Steve Hucke stated, "our freshmen are starting to come around and give us some more depth." RCTC has out scored its last five opponents 394-230 and have forced 170 turnovers with their pressure defense and fast break offense. "It is a fun ride right now," Hucke commented, "we still have a lot to learn but we are getting better." RCTC is now off until they play in Minneapolis against Mesabi Range (who they defeated earlier 78-63) on December 29 at 2:00pm and then United Tribes Technical College on December 30 at noon. "These games will be tough," Hucke said, "always tough to travel and play after a break." Maria Gangelhoff, SO from Sleepy Eye is currently leading the team in scoring averaging 20.5 points per game, Whitney Fick FR, Lake City is second at 12 points per game and Brittni Mayer, FR, Dover-Eyota and Nikki Borkhuis, SO, Watertown, SD are averaging 9.3 points per game "Our defense has really stepped it up," commented Hucke, "we are riding our defense right now and the offense is getting better." RCTC is gearing up for quite a battle in the MCAC Southern Division as Anoka-Ramsey and Minneapolis CTC are both ranked in the top 5 and Minnesota West is a much improved team. "Yeah, it is going to be a dogfight for the top 4 spots in the South to get the MCAC State Tournament," Hucke stated, "as many as 6 teams I think will be able to contend for those 4 spots." Good Luck to the Yellowjackets!
On December 4 the RCTC Yellowjackets will host Fon Du Lac at 6:00pm for their first home game of the season. "We are looking forward to playing at home after being on the road the first four games," Head Coach Steve Hucke stated. The Yellowjackets are currently 2-2 on the season after 2 tough road loses to MATC and NIACC. "We have been focused on getting our newcomers up to speed," Hucke commented, "we have made some great strides in the last couple of weeks and we are ready to play again." Also on Friday the "2009 National Championship Banner" will be revealed during a pre-game ceremony. "It will be exciting to see the banner go up in the rafters" Hucke said, "the banner will be a great reminder of a great season!" The Yellowjackets were a little tight as the team was trying to get Anne the 6 points that she needed early and it did not come until about the 10 minute mark of the first half on her 2 3 pointer of the night. "We weren't really in a flow in the first half," Hucke explained, "we were more focused on getting the 6 points rather than just playing basketball." After Breland hit her shot the Yellowjackets went on a 17-0 run after a short ceremony. On November 14, 2008 Anne Breland 5’11” Sophomore Guard signed a National Letter of Intent to play her next 2 years of Basketball for the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee Panthers a NCAA DI program that participates in the Horizon League Conference. “We are extremely excited for Anne and her family,” Yellowjacket Head Coach Steve Hucke stated, “she has worked very hard to achieve the dream of playing Division 1 basketball.” Anne, a 2009 NJCAA 1st Team Pre-Season All-American, was a 2008 Distinguished Academic All-American, NJCAA Academic All-American, NJCAA DIII 1st Team All-American, 1st Team Region XIII, 1st Team MCAC All-State, and 1st Team All-Southern Division selection. Congratulations to Anne!
Coach Sandy Botham on Breland:
“Annie is just a super get for us. She can score in a number of ways, but her outside shooting is her greatest strength. She is also a tremendous rebounder. She was very highly recruited out of high school but made a wise decision to stay home and play for Coach (Steve) Hucke at RCTC. She went from a very controlled tempo in high school to getting a lot of freedom in Coach Hucke’s offense and her numbers have been phenomenal. She’s had games in college where she’s scored more than her team in high school would typically have put up. The whole RCTC staff has really ignited a passion for the game in her that has not only served them very well obviously, but I know will serve us very well too. She should have two great years here at Milwaukee.”
“I expect Annie to contribute immediately. We need shooters and during the entire recruiting process, I never saw a better shooter than Annie. But she can do so much more than that, and her numbers at RCTC prove it. She can rebound, pass, and take it to the rim, and she has played in an offense that lets her have a lot of freedom, which is what she will have here as well.”
“What a great kid! When I recruit a player, I want talent of course, but also character – and Annie has that in droves – she’s an Academic All-American, is extremely coach-able, and has a super personality – she is the total package. I’m so looking forward to coaching her!”
In the recent NJCAA DIII Pre-Season Women's Basketball Poll released last week, the RCTC Women's Basketball team comes in as the No. 1 team in the country to start the 2008-09 season. "We are excited about the recognition," Head Coach Steve Hucke stated, "but we know that rankings only matter after the conclusion of the National Tournament in March." The Yellowjackets finished as the No. 3 team in the final poll of 2008 and finished as the Region XIII A Runner-up. "That game has left a bad taste in our mouths," Hucke commented, "we have used that as motivation to work harder and be prepared for our season this year." RCTC will look to repeat as MCCC (since changed to MCAC) State and Southern Division Champions with an overall record of 26-4 and 11-1 in the Division last year. Led by Distinguished Academic All-American, NJCAA DIII Academic All-American, NJCAA DIII 1st Team All-American and 2009 Pre-Season 1st Team All-American, Anne Breland, the Yellowjackets are working very hard to try and get to the National Tournament, which they will host along with the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission on March 12-14, 2009. Also returning for RCTC is Amanda Degnan, St. Charles High School who averaged 14.5 points per game off the bench and Courtney Jones, Kingsland, tough defensive minded point guard. "We are looking for Sam and Chelsea to help us out right away as they have both experienced what the college game is like," Hucke stated, "they will help bring along a talented group of freshmen who need to get their feet wet." RCTC will continue their fast paced style of play and put pressure on their opponents. RCTC finished as the 2nd ranked team in scoring offense at 76.5 points per game last season and only allowed 55 points per game defensively. "That is our focus, defensive stops," Hucke replied, "that will help fuel your offense." RCTC will open their first home game on November 19, 2008 at 6:00 PM. against NIACC (Mason City, IA) in the UCR Regional Sports Center. "We will be a fun and exciting team to watch, " Hucke commented, "come on out and cheer us on."

RCTC moves to 7-3 and travels to Mason City to take on NJCAA DII North Iowa Area Community College. "We beat them the first time so it will be a battle."
