2008 College For Kids Call for Instructors

To:   Potential Faculty for Rochester College For Kids
From: Colleen Landherr Maddox, RCTC Community & Youth Program Director
Re:      Request for Instructors
Date:  February 4, 2008

Rochester College For Kids 2008
August 4-8, grades 6, 7, & 8 – 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
August 4-8, grades 3, 4, & 5 - 8:00 AM – 12:00 – AND 12:30 – 4:00 PM

Over the past 19 years, the College For Kids program has been very successful and has grown tremendously.  As we strive toward continuous improvement, we examine what has occurred in educational delivery over the past several years, the needs of gifted and talented youth, reduction in public school programs, survey results from parents and instructors, and how we can better serve this unique population.

Our goals are to immerse students in a specific discipline and expose them to a variety of learning styles, resources and energize their own cognitive and artistic skills.  We need your assistance in designing what we can offer these students so that they come away with a feeling of excitement, empowerment and energy.

Students will choose one class to concentrate on for the entire week.  This will give you, the instructor, the freedom to explore deeper the subject concepts, a variety of learning styles, guest speakers and possible field trips.  If you would like to Team Teach with another instructor, please give me a call so we may discuss your ideas and assure that they align with this format.

Instructors are paid a flat fee of $450.00 per half day class for the week.  This is based on twenty hours of instruction at a rate of $22.50 per hour.  There must be a minimum of 10 students in each class or the class will be dropped and students placed in another.  Staffing is driven by enrollment.  Therefore, it is important to clearly describe what will be taught in your class and make it something students would be excited about.

Supplies are limited to a $50 per class supply allocation.  You must use the State of Minnesota purchase order process unless there is extenuating circumstances.  If you feel that this supply allocation will be a difficulty for you and what you wish to teach, I highly suggest you seek donations to the program specifically for your classes.  Give me a call and we can explore possibilities.  Receipts and the completed expense form are required for reimbursement of any expenses not covered by a purchase order.

If your child is attending College For Kids, we can deduct the tuition from your salary.  Perhaps you know of an older student (high school age) who may wish to be your class volunteer and assist you all week.  Instructors may need to escort students to and from their class and snack time depending on how many parent/student volunteers we have.  Since many of the instructors also take advantage of this time for a break, we anticipate this will not cause too much difficulty.

Past students will receive a postcard in the mail, directing them to the College For Kids web site for the catalog and registration form.  Instructors, Gifted & Talented Coordinators and Principals will also receive information with the web address.  Students and parents will be able to print the catalog and the registration form. Registration will be open this year – NO SPECIFIC START DATE.  Please help communicate with your students and colleagues that the catalog will be available on-line beginning the last week in March. A limited number of catalogs will also be printed and sent to schools at that time for distribution.  Please ask in the school office or from your gifted and talented school coordinator for copies.

Your enthusiastic participation as an instructor in this program will continue to make it a quality program for gifted and talented youth.

Please complete the attached Course Proposal and return it to: University Center Rochester, College for Kids, 851 SE 30th Ave., Box 50, Rochester, MN  55904.  Please respond by February 29, 2008.  This date is a must in terms of compiling a schedule, discussions with you on your class offering, as well as developing the web site catalog.

Thank you!
