“In life, there are some things you cannot do alone. It’s just too hard.”

These words, spoken by Student Success Day keynote speaker Ujay Green, reflect experiences in his life and his education. An RCTC alumus and 2017 University of Minnesota graduate, Green is familiar with struggling to do hard things alone.

Born in the West African nation of Liberia, he came to the United States at age four, eventually landing in foster care at age 15. Green credits his high school football coach Jack Negen for getting him through high school.

“He was the first person to ever tell me I believe in you,'” Green said.

Now, thanks to support and encouragement from RCTC staff and faculty who also told Green, “I believe in you,” he has gone on to launch a career in business, currently working for the Royal Bank of Canada.

This semester’s Student Success Day focused on reminding students that they are believed in and that they do not have to do hard things alone.

Sessions offered throughout the day encouraged students to start thinking about their long-term goals and how they will be accomplished.

With career workshops and a transfer fair, as well as sessions teaching interview skills and resume writing, opportunities were available for students to get help and make plans. Free professional portraits were also offered.

Educational and career planning resources are also available throughout the semester. Visit the Workforce Center, schedule an appointment with RCTC’s career counselors Deb Vang and Gregg Wright or sit down with your counselor to talk about your college plans.

You do not have to do it alone.
