Best Bee Award



Congratulations to Shirley Wilson who is being awarded the BEST BEE AWARD for February.  Shirley has worked at RCTC since 1989 and currently teaches BTEC courses.  Here is what Shirley’s nominator has to say: 

The BTEC Department had an unexpected emergency situation that required Shirley to take on additional teaching responsibilities.  At first, we thought it would be for just a few days; it ended up being for over six weeks.  During that time, Shirley Wilson had to sub for some of the classes in addition to having her own teaching assignments, finding short-term and long-term subs for the courses, getting materials ready as needed, and having the usual personal life situations associated with families.  She spent many hours getting ready whatever needed to be ready so that the students would continue to have quality instruction and so that the subs would get the help they needed for the unexpected length of the teaching time.  She spent many, many hours coordinating everything, doing extra teaching and preparation when needed, and making sure that everything was running smoothly.

Shirley displays RCTC’s values as follows: 

Innovation: She tries new ideas and equipment that she hears about at the conferences and sessions she attends.  She is one of the individuals trying out the Apple iPad. 

Excellence: She has very high standards for herself and for her students.  She is committed in helping the students succeed to the best of their abilities. 

Fun: In addition to being a hard worker, she is able to have fun at the right times.  She will suggest a get together and offer to make arrangements as needed.  We know that we will have an enjoyable time when we have activities where Shirley is present. 

Learner-Centered: Shirley focuses on the students and what can be done to help the student succeed.  She wants the students to success and will work them as much as needed to help them do their best.  During the time when the department needed many subs, she made sure that everyone worked together for what was best for the students. 

Respect: She is very respectful of individuals by the way she interacts with them.  She treats people the way she would like to be treated. 

Teamwork: Shirley has been our program leader several times and does an excellent job.  She does such a good job that we think she should have the job all of the time; but that would not be fair to her.  When work needs to be done, she is one of the first to volunteer.  She is active on various committees.  She works on being fair to all and letting all have their say in all decision making.

Congratulations Shirley!  As Best Bee for the Month of February, Shirley is being recognized with a personalized certificate and the employee of the month parking space.

The Employee Relations Committee (ERC) has implemented a process to recognize and reward employees for outstanding job performances. Recognitions can be awarded:

  1. Work Team Recognition. Recognition would include committee work, community service work, and department achievements and could also highlight something new the group has done or is working on. Work Teams who receive this award will be recognized through publicizing the award in the Crossings, on a "recognition" web site, possibly on our digital wall, their very own "pizza party" and gifts.
  2. Individual Recognition. This is a modified reinstatement of the "Bee Award" started by Bonnie Mercer. Recognition would include committee work, community service work, and individual achievements, extra effort, exemplary service or demonstrated expertise in their field. Individuals who receive this award will be recognized through publicizing the award in the Crossings, on the "recognition" web site, possibly on our digital wall, and gifts.
  3. Write Personal Notes. All employees are encouraged to write notes of recognition and appreciation to their colleagues and co-workers. This is a simple gesture which has a positive effect on the sender and receiver.


  • Anyone can nominate an employee or work team. The nomination remains active indefinitely.
  • The nomination form should include a narrative of why the nominee(s) merit being named Employee/Work Team {Best Bee(s)} of the Month based on criteria the nominator feels is relevant.
  • The nominee(s) may be any employee of Rochester Community and Technical College.
  • Nominations received by the 15th of the month are eligible for consideration of the following month's award.
