How Do Academic Advisors Help Your Son/Daughter?

Academic Advising covers all aspects of your childs college education. From the first time that they make contact with their advisor, to the time that they turn in their graduation application, their advisor will help them make the correct choices. This means taking the right classes and making sure that they are on track for graduation.

During appointments, advisors will talk about how certain classes will affect their progress and help them determine the correct path to take. Advisors are readily accessible via e-mail, phone, or in person. Encourage your son or daughter to take full advantage of this opportunity.

What is Full-Time Status?

In order to be considered a full time student at Rochester Community and Technical College, the student must be enrolled in at least 12 credits. Maintaining full-time status is important for health insurance coverage, eligiability for financial aid, and athletic eligibility.

Confidentiality

Advisors are happy to answer general parent questions such as college procedures, campus resources, or academic programs. The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prohibits advisors from discussing specific information about your son or daughter, regardless of the students age, without their permission. We strongly encourage all students to discuss their academic progress with their family.

How Parents Can Help?
  1. Encourage your son/daughter to establish contact with their academic advisor and maintain a regular meeting schedule.
  2. Encourage your son/daughter to become independant in their choices and allow them to make informed and responsible choices.
  3. Emphasis that they are the one that is responsible for their education.
