Learning at a distance involves a separation between the instructor and the student. The student may be located across the campus, across the state or in another country. During the last decade, distance education has been transformed dramatically. Although it originally referred to correspondence courses and communicating using the postal service and telephone, it now centers on the use of computers and Internet technologies. New technologies have removed many obstacles and provided benefits for everyone involved.

RCTC offers many degrees that are completely online:
Students that have never taken an online class using Desire2Learn, are required to take a short course that introduces them to that learning environment.
Students taking Internet courses complete weekly assignments at their own computers and communicate with their instructor by electronic mail and by using Desire2Learn. Students complete assignments, take tests, and complete all other coursework just as they would in an on-campus class.
At RCTC, students that have never taken an online class using Desire2Learn, are required to take a short course that introduces them to that learning environment.
