GENERAL EDUCATION
(MnSCU Policy 3.17)

(RCTC Policy 3.17.1.1)

Part 1. Associate in Arts Degree: The Associate in Arts degree will have the complete forty (40) credits of Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) coursework with the following configuration:
Goal 1 – Communications – eleven (11) credits to include English 1117 or 1917, English 1118 or 1918, and Speech 1114 or 1130.
Goal 2 – Critical Thinking – met by any Goal 1-10 course.
Goal 3 – Natural Sciences – six (6) credits, two different lab sciences
Goal 4 – Mathematics – three (3) credits
Goal 5 – History and Social Sciences – nine (9) credits, at least two credits from each of three different areas.
Goal 6 – Humanities and the Arts – nine (9) credits, at least two credits from each of three areas.
Goal 7 – Human Diversity – two (2) credits
Goal 8 – Global Perspective – two (2) credits
Goal 9 – Ethics and Civil Responsibility – two (2) credits
Goal 10 – People and the Environment – two (2) credits

Part 2. Associate in Science Degree: The Associate in Science degree will have a minimum of 30 credits of Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) coursework with the following configuration.

Goal 1 – Communications – a minimum of three (3) credits
Goal 3 or 4 – Natural Sciences /Mathematics – three (3) credits with science having a lab
Goal 5 – History and Social Sciences – three (3) credits
Goal 6 – Humanities and the Arts – three (3) credits

General education courses must be selected from at least six (6) of the ten (10) MnTC goals.

Part 3. Associate in Applied Science Degree: The Associate in Applied Science degree will have a minimum of 25% general education coursework with at least twelve credits of MnTC.
Goal 1 – Communications – three (3) credits
Goal 3 or 4 – Natural Sciences /Mathematics – three (3) credits with science having a lab
Goal 5 – History and Social Sciences – three (3) credits
Goal 6 – Humanities and the Arts – three (3) credits

The remaining general education credits must be from MnTC if the Associate in Applied Science degree is designated “Transfer.” If the Associate in Applied Science degree is designated “Employment,” the configuration of MnTC coursework above must be completed (3, 3, 3, 3). The remaining general education credits can be from any of the Allied Studies Goals: Goal 11 – Health and Wellness; Goal 12 – Computer/Information Literacy; Goal 13 – Career and Personal Development; and/or Goal 14 – Foreign Languages.

Part 4. Diplomas (larger than 45 credits and not excluded by the Ness Law): The Diplomas (larger than 45 credits and not excluded by Ness Law) will be required to have a minimum of three (3) credits from any of the ten (10) MnTC Goals. The remaining five (5) credits can be MnTC, Allied Studies, any 1000 level course outside of the program prefix or any such combination.

Part 5. Diplomas (fewer than 45 credits): The Diplomas of fewer than 45 credits are not required to have general education.

Part 6. Certificates: Certificates are not required to have general education.
