Dental Assistant Program Application - AAS, Diploma & Extended Functions Certificate Options


IMPORTANT NOTE:
Thank you for your interest in the Dental Assistant Program at RCTC. Dental Assistant applications are accepted beginning September 1st each year until the program is filled.

Admission is based on the date that all supporting documentation is received in the Admissions and Records Office.

TWO YEAR DELIVERY OPTIONS – A.A.S. and Diploma:

Option #1: Dental Assistant Associate of Applied Sciences Degree Program.
64 credits – 2 year delivery - Required sequencing is as follows:

Note: All 1st year general education courses must be complete prior to the 2nd year of the program (English, Psych, Biology & Communication). The Humanities requirement could be completed in the 1st year or Fall semester of the 2nd year.

Pre-Admission Criteria for Options #1 and #2:

  • Diploma from high school/GED.  (Applicants in their senior year of high school may be given provisional acceptance into the Dental Assistant Program if they are on track to graduate and meet Pre-Admission criteria #2-4. Final acceptance into the Dental Assistant Program will be awarded upon submission of proof of high school graduation).  
  • Earned a “2.5” GPA or better from high school or college.
  • Earned a “C” letter grade or better in high school Biology or college Biology (BIOL 1101 or its transfer equivalent).
  • Apply to RCTC and declare Dental Assisting as your major.
    Complete the following two (2) applications and return them to RCTC Admissions and Records:

    • Dental Assistant Program Application (after September 1st):   

Students must place into College level Reading and English on the ASAP Placement test (or its equivalent).

ONE YEAR DELIVERY OPTIONS – A.A.S. and Diploma:
One year delivery is very fast-paced and requires the student to be very focused, self-motivated and organized. Due to the rigor of the heavy credit load in the one year option, the student should not plan to work outside of school during the week and/or have limited work hours on weekends in order to have adequate time to achieve success in the program.   

Option #3: Dental Assistant Diploma Program.
47 Credits – 1 Year Option – Required sequencing listed below.

Option #4: Dental Assistant Associates of Applied Science Degree Program.
64 Credits – 1 Year* - Required sequencing listed below.
(*The 17 credits of Minnesota Transfer Curriculum as listed on the Dental Assistant Associate of Applied Sciences Degree Program plan must have been completed prior to entry into the Dental Assistant Program.)

Note:  Options #3 and #4 have the same sequencing and pre-admission criteria.

  • Earned a “2.75 GPA or better from high school or college.
  • Apply to RCTC and declare Dental Assisting as your major.

    • Dental Assistant Program Application (after September 1st)

EXPANDED FUNCTIONS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM:

This certificate program is for dental assistants that are already Certified Dental Assistants (Certified by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.) but have not been trained in the Minnesota Expanded Functions.   

Option #5: Dental Assistant Expanded Functions Certificate Program
13 credits – Course sequencing is as follows:

Pre-Admission Criteria:

  • Earned a “2.5” GPA or better from high school or college.
  • The applicant must be currently a Certified Dental Assistant (Certified by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.) and provide a copies of their certification documents.
  • Current certification in American Red Cross Professional Rescuer Level CPR/AED or American Heart BLS Healthcare Provider CPR/AED (Adult, Child, and Infant CPR + AED course.) and must provide a copy of their certificate.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine.
  • Physical Assessment 
  • Health Insurance
  • Approved background check.
  • Apply to RCTC and declare Dental Assisting as your major.

Pre-requisite to Enter Spring Semester Courses:

Minimum of a “C” letter grade in DA 1225 Dental Infection Control, prior to enrolling in DA 1265, DS 1300, or DA 1270.

Clinical & Laboratory Health & Safety Provisions

RCTC and the Dental Assistant Program comply with mandated and recommended health and safety policies to ensure a safe learning and working environment for students, staff, and patients. View The RCTC Bloodborne and Infectious Disease Policy (RCTC Policy 6.4.4). Upon entering the Dental Assistant Program, students will be given a copy of the RCTC Dental Assistant Program Lab/Clinic Policies Manual, which details all program policies relating to infection control, hazards management, and safety in the lab and clinical settings.
