2018 Dental Hygiene Program Application

Thank you for your interest in the Dental Hygiene Program at RCTC. Dental Hygiene applications are accepted October 1st - March 1st.

Once minimum requirements have been met, admission is based on a point system. Points are given for completed general education requirements. Some courses are assigned higher point values (i.e. science courses).

If you are interested in applying, please submit all official documentation prior to the deadline.

Admission Prerequisites

Registration and Sequence of Courses: General education credits may be taken prior to entering the Dental Hygiene Program. The dental hygiene courses are a four-semester sequence and must be taken without a break in registration.

Program Completion: Those who complete the program will be awarded an Associate in Applied Science Degree by RCTC. Graduates are eligible to take the licensure exams which are required in all 50 states for the practice of dental hygiene.

Prerequisites to Application:

  • You must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.00
  • Raw science GPA of 2.5.  Raw science GPA is calculated using any and all attempts within the most recent 5-year period in BIOL 1217, 1218, 2021 and CHEM 1117 (or equivalent).  No less than 8 credits of basic sciences completed.
  • Students with no prior college experience are NOT eligible for admission into Dental Hygiene.
  • All basic science courses and Dental Radiology (DS 1300) must be completed within the past five years calculated from the Fall Semester in which you plan entry into the Dental Hygiene Program.
  • All program curriculum courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C. This also applies to courses transferred from other colleges.
  • Application is valid for the current year only and must include final official transcripts from ALL previously attended institutions of higher education. It is the student’s responsibility to assure transcripts are current.
  • Please refer to the Dental Hygiene Program Application for submission deadline.
  • The Dental Hygiene Program receives many applications annually. A maximum of 16 students are admitted each year, thus admission is competitive.
  • You must declare Dental Hygiene as your major.

Program Selection Process:

Applications are scored using the following scale:

  • Points will only be awarded for courses completed with a “C” or better.  This includes all transfer courses.
  • Science classes (including BIOL 1217, BIOL 1218, BIOL 2021 and CHEM 1117) will be assigned 7 points for a grade of A, 5 points for a grade of B and 3 points for a grade of C in each course.
  • DS 1300 will be assigned 5 points for a grade of A(+/–), 4 points for a grade of B(+/–) and 3 points for a grade of C(+/–).
  • Non-Science General Studies classes will be assigned 3 points for a grade of A, 2 points for a grade of B and 1 point for a grade of C.  NUTR 1211 is categorized as a non-science general study.
  • If all criteria are equal, the raw science GPA will be used as a tie breaker.  If the tie continues, the earlier application date will break the tie.
  • The selection process for admission will be completed by mid-May.
  • Admission will be based on individual merit, without regard for race, creed, color, sex, age, marital status, national origin or physical handicap.

Although all of the above requirements are necessary for admittance, please be advised that having all the requirements does not imply acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program. The Dental Hygiene Program receives many applications annually for the 16 available positions thus, admission is competitive.

Program Accreditation: American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation.  The Commission on Dental Accreditation is the specialized accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education to accredit programs which provide basic preparation for licensure or certification in dentistry and the related disciplines.
