EQUESTRIAN CLUB

The Equestrian Club was founded in Spring 2006 by graduate Ashley Seiler. The club is offered to all RCTC students that are horse enthusiasts wanting to increase their knowledge in the equine industry and build a network of contacts through peer interaction. The club attends horse expos, hosts clinics and horse shows as well as volunteers their time to non-profit organizations. Students in the club fund-raise to help cover the cost of travel to IHSA competitions.

INTERCOLLEGIATE HORSE SHOW ASSOCIATION TEAM

RCTC has previously had both Western and Hunt Seat intercollegiate riding teams. This involves traveling to other colleges and competing in horse shows with a team of riders. Competitors do not need to be advanced riders to participate as there are various levels of competition from walk/jog to jumping. There has not been an IHSA team in several years but it is being discussed.

NEWS

Fall 2017

The program is in its third year at Silver Springs Equestrian Center. We are very happy to be there as it is lovely, large, and warm in the winter. There have been curriculum changes in the last year so we have several new classes and several that have been removed. There is still a significant amount of hands-on learning. Students generally spend mornings at the barn and afternoons in lecture or on field trips.

The Equestrian Club has had their first meeting and Melissa Machin has been voted as the Club President. They are working on clothing orders, a highway clean up, and field trips.

Last year, our program was awarded a Minnesota Horse Council Grant and we are replacing some of our worn out equipment. So far, we have lovely new western saddle pads.

Long time instructor, Jonathon Holland is not with us this semester for the first time in many years. We wish him the best in his new job at the University of Minnesota Crookston.

Our Colt Starting class will be held again in the spring semester with colts arriving in late January for their three months of training. Anyone who wishes to have their colts participate should contact Julie.Christie@rctc.edu

Here are three of our new students for 2017. KeAnna, Tamaura, and Annette. They are posing with our life-sized fiberglass horse, Rocky.
