Name: Malus ‘Spring Snow’
Campus Location: Atrium entrance driveway
New crab-apple cultivars are introduced yearly. The actual number of cultivars is unknown but safe to say that there are at least 100 types available in nurseries and probably 400 different types grown in arboretums and botanical gardens across the country. Crab-apples are adaptable to a variety of soil conditions. The trees vary in flower color, fruit color, and insect and disease resistance. Visitors are greeted by rows of ‘Spring Snow’ crab-apple in front of the UCR Atrium Entrance. ‘Spring Snow’ is completely covered with pink buds that open to fragrant white flowers in spring. Crab-apple fruit can create a mess in the fall but not with this cultivar, ‘Spring Snow’ is fruitless.
