IMPORTANT NOTE:

To be considered for Fall 2008 Admission submit an application by 4:30 PM on Friday, February 1, 2008. All official supporting documentation must also be received by the RCTC Admissions and Records Office by the deadline.

The associate degree nurse is prepared to practice nursing in situations involving direct patient care, most frequently in the hospital or long-term care facility.

Graduates are prepared to function as defined in Minnesota statutes by:

• providing a nursing assessment of the community;
• providing nursing care supportive to or restorative of life functions such as skilled ministration of nursing care, supervising and teaching nursing personnel, health teaching and counseling, case finding and referral to other health resources; and
• evaluating these actions

After successful completion of this program, which includes classes at RCTC and care of patients in the Mayo Clinic Hospitals in addition to area nursing homes and selected community agencies, graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination - Registered Nurse.

Career Opportunities

Many employment opportunities are available locally, state-wide, and nationally for Registered Nurses in hospitals, clinics, and nursing home facilities.  There is currently a shortage of qualified registered nurses.

Educational opportunities for completion of a bachelor's degree in Nursing are available through an articulated agreement with Winona State University.      WSU also provides Master's preparation in Nursing.  Both of these options are available at the University Center Rochester campus.  Other higher education completion programs in Nursing are available locally.

• Work well with other people (patients, physicians, and other allied health professionals)
• Good communication skills (i.e. listening, teaching, documenting)
• Problem solving skills
• Caring and empathetic
• Able to work varied work hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays
• Respect for confidentiality
• Manual dexterity, visual acuity, physical strength and endurance
• Neat, well-groomed, professional appearance
