Explanation of the importance of technical standards:

All applicants are held to the same academic and technical standards of admission and training, with reasonable accommodations as needed for students with disabilities.

If a student states he/she can meet the technical standards with accommodation, then the college will determine whether it agrees that the student can meet the technical standards with reasonable accommodation; this includes a review of whether the accommodations requested are reasonable, taking into account whether accommodation would jeopardize clinician/patient safety, or the educational process of the student or the institution, including all coursework, clinical experiences and internships deemed essential to graduation.

 

 

 

Physical Requirements for the VA/VT Program: 

1. Able to stand, bend, and stoop.
2. Able to lift a minimum of 30 pounds.
3. Able to detect odors sufficient to maintain environmental safety and patient needs.
4. Able to hear monitor alarms, emergency signals, and cries for help.
5. Able to hear warning signs from animals and humans of impending danger/injury.
6. Able to manipulate instruments, supplies and equipment with speed, dexterity, and good  eye-hand coordination.
7. Able to use their hands and wrists to securely restrain animals.
8. Able to engage in procedures involving grasping, pushing, pulling, holding, and manipulating.
9. Able to assist with and/or lift, move, position, and manipulate the patient who is unconscious.
10. Demonstrate calm and effective responses, especially in emergency situations.
11. Able to prevent or escape injury caused by animals (biting, kicking, stampede).
12. Able to accurately observe a patient and read medical records, prescriptions, and microscopic test results.
