RCTC and StarID

Identity and Access Management

What is a StarID?

The StarID is a username that will be used across the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities to access information technology systems and services. As systems are configured to use StarID, the number of usernames and passwords students and employees will need to remember and use will be reduced. Ideally, a single username can be used to log into any system and that will be StarID. This means that students who plan on transferring to another school in the MNSCU system will continue to use the same StarID and password.

What is RCTC’s goal for implementing StarID?

Starting Spring Semester 2014, all students and employees of RCTC will be using StarID as a single credential to access the following services:  College Computers, eServices, D2L, E-mail, Employee Website, and others.

What can I do with my StarID?

Each college and university can enable access to their individual IT systems with StarID. The most common of these systems include; student and employee email, campus computers and printers, Desire2Lean (D2L) and eServices. A number of systemwide IT systems accept a StarID wherever the system is used. Here are a few of these systems:

  • D2L – The Instructional Management System (IMS) used by MNSCU faculty, staff and students
  • MoveItSecurely- MoveItSecurely facilitates the secure sharing of information.
  • STARS- STARS (Systemwide Training and Registration Site).
  • StarLAN- A wireless service that gives visiting employees and students access to the Internet.
  • Program Navigator- the Program Navigator system is used to create and redesign academic programs and enter them into Program Inventory and ISRS.
  • CEMRS (EMS)- Classroom, Event Management, and Resource Scheduling.
  • MnSCU Connect- a systemwide SharePoint for cross-institution collaboration.
  • E-timesheet - Currently, all RCTC staff members use their StarID to enter timesheet and leave requests.
  • Local (homegrown) Applications - RCTC specific applications such as Idea Hive, IPP, Student Alert system, and more.
  • ISRS (future)- All ISRS administrative web applications will be configured to use StarID for login. Student-facing applications (eServices) accept StarID but do not require it.

Who is eligible for a StarID?

All faculty, staff and students of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system are eligible for a StarID. Guests can also be authorized for a StarID.

Project Milestones
A top priority for Enterprise Access Management is to establish a connection between the enterprise IAM systems and campus IT systems. A project to establish this connection breaks down into two areas:

  1. Campus directory integration. This creates a connection to the campus directory that automatically adds, updates and removes StarID accounts from the directory using rules established by the school. Customizable rules are based on the various type of affiliations that a person can have with the schools; admitted student, enrolled student, student employee, staff, faculty, adjunct faculty, etc.
  2. Conversion of campus users and IT systems.Once the directory connection is established, each school can configure their individual IT systems to use StarID. The most common of systems include; student and employee email, classroom and lab computers, network printers, Desire2Learn (D2L) and eServices.

Each school defines an approach and time-line for converting its users and IT systems that works best for them. Conversions, which are managed solely by the school, can happen all on a single day or over several months, depending on the school.
