What
are the results?
Four
years after high school graduation, Upward Bound participants were four
times more likely to have earned a collge degree as were comparible
non-participants. Thus far, 98% of RCTC Upward Bound graduates have
enrolled in postsecondary education.
Profile of Graduates:
- 67 students have completed the program over the past 6 years. Dept
of Education requires that we track students for 6 years.
- 97% attended at least one quarter/semester of college
- 39% have graduated from college
- An additional 23% have graduated from a community college and are
continuing to pursue their educations at a four-year institution
- An additional 48% are currently in the midst of their college programs
- 94% of the Upward Bound class of 2004 are currently enrolled in
college
- Over 40 students have participated or are currently participating
in the Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program(PSEOP)
Special Recognitions for undergraduates during the
past six years:
- Nou Chang was the youth recipient of the Mayor's Medal of Honor,
and the only youth recipient of the first annual Jefferson awards,
sponsored by KAAL television.
- Sopheak Pho was selected first place winner in a Microsoft/Boys
and Girls Club national digital arts competition.
- Chris Russ is on the Boys and Girls Club Governing Council, and
has represented Rochester at both state and national competitions.
- Nemanja Pezic participated in state and national DECA competitions.
- Christine Hostetter was selected to participate in the All State
Band.
- Amanda Pearson and Nou Chang are on the Olmsted County Youth Commission.
- Soukkham Veerasaeng is the youth representative on the Olmsted County
Human Rights Commission.
- Brooke Burch is on the Diversity Council.
- Julie Vongsopha's talents were showcased at a regional art show.
- Three Upward Bound students have been speakers at their high school's
graduation.
- Five students attended the 2004 Luther Symposium.
- Six students were selected to attend Flourish.
- Six sophomores were selected to attend the Northern Stars Leadership
Conference.
- Six students had poems selected for national publication.
- Nine students participate in their school's academic honor societies.
- Five Upward Bound students have received Beat the Odds scholarships.
- Cathy Le received a national Discover Scholarship.
- Over 40 students have participated/are participating in the Post
Secondary Enrollment Options Program (PSEOP).
Scholarships and Special Honors
- Of the 67 students who graduated between 1999-2004:
- 64 students have received at least one scholarship
- A total of 136 scholarships have been awarded
- The total amount of scholarship money that has been received by
students is approximately $318,724.00
- Twenty-two scholarships involving statewide competition have been
received
- Four students were awarded national scholarships. They are:Svetlana
Abramova ('01): Watson Scholarship. Thea Thim ('01): Burger King Scholarship.
Sokhoeun Chhunn ('99): Yoshiama Scholarship (as a result of this honor,
she was featured in the national magazine Twist). Darin Yous ('00):
Gates Millennium Scholarship
- Thien Luu ('98) was selected the student winner in the statewide
Anne Bancroft Award competition
- Quyen Dang ('98) was named 1 of only 3 RCTC Outstanding Students
for 2000
- Sunshine Ellsworth ('99) was the first place winner in the regional
Post-Secondary Agricultural Speech Contest
- Thuy Nguyen ('97) was selected to participate in the 3M Minority
Student Internship Program
- Four students participated in Study Abroad Programs
