Rochester Community and Technical College students Jenna Goldsmith and Andrea Walker have been nominated for selection to the All-USA Community College Academic Team.

Goldsmith and Walker, both active members of RCTC’s academic honor society, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), were nominated ?because they exemplify the four hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa: service, fellowship, scholarship, and leadership, said Jamie Mahlberg, PTK Faculty Advisor.

The RCTC Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, founded in January, 1927, is one of the oldest in the country. PTK is the international honor society founded to recognize and encourage academic achievement among two-year college students. PTK offers opportunities for the development of leadership and service, the exchange of ideas in an intellectual climate, fellowship for scholars, and simulation of interest in academic excellence. Part-time, full-time and international students currently enrolled at RCTC and working on a certificate, diploma, or degree are eligible if they meet one of these requirements: At least a 3.5 GPA after 12 credit hours (1000 level or higher) at RCTC or at least a 3.4 GPA after 16 credit hours (1000 level or higher) at RCTC. To maintain good standing students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2.

Our two nominees this year are examples of students whom RCTC should be proud to have enrolled here, notes Mahlberg. They are both officers of our Phi Theta Kappa chapter, their academic achievements are exemplary, and their commitment to both campus and community service sets them apart.

The All-USA Community College Academic Team recognizes high achieving two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society.

Twenty team members are named annually, each receiving a $5,000 scholarship. In addition to scholarships, team members are featured in the USA TODAY newspaper and presented at the annual President’s Breakfast held during the American Association of Community Colleges Annual Convention.

Final announcement of the 20-person All-USA Academic Team will be made by April, 2016.
