How We Treat Each Other Matters

During our Fall 2018 Convocation, the faculty and staff of RCTC came together to hear from our new President Dr. Jeffery Boyd, reconnect with one another, and hear about other exciting updates for the new academic year. President Boyd talked quite a bit about how important relationships are to the work we do with students, and how important it is for us to be kind to one another as we come in and out of work each day. His message was very well received, and it reinforced to me how important it is that we as educators define and model this behavior to our students in our words and deeds. The behavior I speak of is civility.

A little over a year ago the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities embarked on a mission to define civility, and then think of ways to operationalize it for our students and employees. That work has culminated in the creation of the Yellowjacket Pledge a written commitment to important values related to how we treat each other. Not only is it a great teaching tool for students and visitors to our campus, but it is a living statement of how we want to treat one another. This matters so much in a time when the media, politicians, and entertainers don’t always give us good examples of how to do this. This matters so much as we try to face collective challenges head on, and create a better world for our communities. Only together can we reach a better future and solve some of our most daunting problems. Only together, committed to civility, can we create safe environments to learn and achieve our own personal goals and ambitions.

As we start a new year, I encourage you to join me in taking the?Yellowjacket Pledge, and ask your friends and co-workers to do the same. Reflect on how you can, through your actions, deeds, and thoughts, reflect the values therein: Respect, Responsibility, Civility, Compassion, and Integrity. In addition to physically (or electronically) signing the pledge, participate in monthly discussions and activities about these values, wear your Yellowjacket Pledge button proudly, talk with classmates and co-workers about it, and when you see these values not being followed within our community, address it with courage and kindness. I am proud to be a Yellowjacket, and to take this pledge. I hope you are too!
