Men’s Basketball

The men played nothing but close games in the MCAC/NJCAA Region 13 tournament, but pulled out ahead at the end and will go to the NJCAA national tournament.

On Friday, Feb. 27, the Yellowjackets played their first game against Rainy River Community College at noon. The game was close to the very end, with RCTC pulling ahead to win 81-74.

Justyn Galloway led with 24 points, followed by Robert Claypool with 16. Keiron Sauer had 11 rebounds of RCTC’s 45. Claypool hit three of four 3-pointer attempts. Demetrius Cady also snagged three 3-pointers. The Yellowjackets hit 80 percent of their free throws during the game.

Next the Yellowjackets took on Central Lakes at 3 p.m. on Saturday, where they won 77-72.

Claypool sank 19 points, followed by Ben Ratfliff with 15. Claypool also sank three 3-pointers. Winning the game put them in the finals for the tournament.

On Sunday, March 1, the Yellowjackets took on Vermilion for a chance at the NJCAA National Tournament and grabbed it from them 76-73.

Galloway sank 20 points during the game, followed by Ratliff with 14. Sauer snagged 13 rebounds.

With this win, the Yellowjackets are on their way to the NJCAA National Tournament in New York, March 12-14. Seeding will be released Tuesday, March 3 at the NJCAA website. They are ranked fifth in the NJCAA DIII National Polls.


Women’s Basketball

After a big win against Anoka-Ramsey on Saturday, the Lady Yellowjackets suffered a close loss to Minnesota West in the pursuit of the NJCAA National Tournament.

RCTC hosted the MCAC/Region 13 tournament this past weekend, and the Yellowjackets played first against Anoka-Ramsey, winning 72-50.

Tailor Raymond scored 15 points, followed by Danielle Adams and Natalie Reinardy with 14 each. Adams snagged 10 rebounds of RCTC’s 46. Audra Durham sank three 3-pointers, and Reinardy sank two of her two 3-pointer attempts.

The ladies led by 10 points at the half and pulled ahead by an additional 12-point lead in the second.

On Sunday, the Yellowjackets took on Minnesota West and lost by one point, 59-60.

The Yellowjackets played a close game with Minnesota West the whole game. Adams sank 18 points, followed by Raymond with 11. Durham hit two of two 3-pointer attempts, and Adams and Jessica Foster each added two of their own 3-pointers.

“I am really proud of this team and what we accomplished this year,” Coach Steve Hucke said. We overcame injuries early in the year and some tough early losses against good teams. To end up as Division Champs and playing in the Regional Championship are by no means reasons to hang our heads.”

The Yellowjacket Softball Team hosted the first tournament of the season in the Bubble on Friday, Feb. 27.

The Early Bird Tournament brought in five Division II schools from Iowa. Division III RCTC played and beat Iowa Lakes Community College first, winning in five innings, 11-3. Next came Iowa Central, which RCTC lost 1-3. The game against Des Moines Area Community College was over in five innings, with Des Moines winning 12-0. The game against North Iowa Area Community College was close, with a one-point loss, 6-7. Kirkwood Community College bested the Yellowjackets in five innings, winning 25-1.

By playing the Division II schools, the Yellowjackets ramp up their game and playing abilities for conference play. After a fourth place showing at Nationals last year, the Yellowjackets have their sights set high.
