Last week in Athletics – March 30


After its earlybird tournament, the RCTC Lady Yellowjacket Softball team traveled to Myrtle Beach, S. C., for its spring trip. The Yellowjackets played 10 games between March 15-19 before heading back to Minnesota. They came home with seven wins and three losses.

The wins: Lewis & Clark Community College, 6-3; Finger Lakes Community College, 14-1; Lackawanna College, 6-0; Onondaga Community College, 8-6; Brookdale Community College, 2-1; Lackawanna College, 14-2; and Onondaga Community College, 6-5. The Yellowjackets lost to: Mercer County Community College, 8-10; Delaware Technical and Community College, 0-8; and Herkimer College, 2-3.

Back in Minnesota, the Yellowjackets hosted the Crossover Tournament Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28.

On Friday, they took on Rainy River and lost 3-5. Christina Stanger made it home twice and Amber Gehrke added the third run.

The Yellowjackets next played against Muscatine Community College, and lost 1-6. Ashley Bunting crossed home plate for the point.

The ladies rallied the next day for two big wins.

They played Mesabi Range and held them to five innings with a 12-2 win. Bunting scored three times, Stanger twice, and Gehrke twice. Also scoring were Haley Vanourney with one, Katie Gatzlaff with one, Alexie Schunke with two, and Kristen Erickson with one. Stanger hit a homerun.

The Yellowjackets next played Central Lakes and beat them 16-4. They really pulled ahead in the seventh inning after scoring seven runs in that inning alone.

Schunke scored four times, Bunting three times, Vanourney, Stanger, and Lanie McCauly twice, and Laura Chalmers, Gehrke, and Erickson once. Schunke hit a homerun and Stanger hit two homeruns.

The Softball team plays next on Friday, April 3, at St. Cloud Technical and Community College at 3:30 p.m.

The Yellowjacets are ranked fifth in the NJCAA Division III National Poll.



The Baseball team also traveled to Myrtle Beach for its spring trip. Of the 11 games played March 14-21, the Yellowjackets won seven.

The wins: County College of Morris, 7-4; Mercer County Community College, 4-3; Montgomery College, 8-4; Chesapeake College, 10-2; Garrett College, 7-5; College of Southern Maryland, 9-3; and Ancilla College, 10-7. The losses: Delaware Technical and Community College, 1-4; County College of Morris, 5-8; Chesapeake College, 0-5; and St. Clair County Community College, 5-6.

The Yellowjackets then traveled to Mauston, Wis., on March 28 (the March 29 games were canceled).

First the Yellowjackets played Anoka-Ramsey, winning 6-1.

Zach Wixo scored two runs, and Zach Eggers, John Brown, Anthony Rosario, and Zach Bakko each scored one run.

Next the Yellowjackets took on Minnesota State, holding them to seven innings with a 10-4 win.

Rosario and Eggers each scored two runs, and Bakko, Dakota Larson, Austin Baab, Ben Glomski, John Brown, and Richard Borquez-Mejias each scored one run.

The Yellowjacket Baseball team plays next on Friday, April 3, against Mesabi Range at noon in Mausten Wis.
