October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Did you know that, on average, one Minnesotan died as a result of an act of domestic violence once every 10 days in the last year?

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This year, RCTC Student Life, in coordination with the Family Violence Coordinating Council, the Rochester Women’s Shelter and Olmsted, Dodge, and Fillmore County Victims Services, is sponsoring informational tables, displays, and presentation on the RCTC Campus.

Every Wednesday this month, a table with information regarding resources for victims of domestic violence will be in either the Atrium or Heintz Center Commons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Oct. 1-31, tombstones commemorating the 38 domestic violence fatalities in Minnesota in the last year will be present on the lawn in front of the Atrium. All students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to view the names and read the stories of the women, men and children who lost their lives in Minnesota as a result of Domestic Violence last year.

A commemorative Remember My Name? display including pictures of the 38 victims of fatal acts of domestic violence will be in the Atrium during the month of October. On Thursday, October 30, at 5:30 p.m. a ceremony honoring the 38 Minnesotans that died last year as a result of Domestic Violence will be held in the Atrium. We will also celebrate the survivors of Domestic Violence. Informational booths will be available from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
