The RCTC Student Senate is the representative body for all students at RCTC. If you are a student interested in advocacy, leadership development, and campus activities, then Student Senate would like to invite you to their first meeting September 6th at 2:00pm in Singley Hall 210. As we begin a new academic year, it is time to remind all students of their responsibility to familiarize themselves with, and adhere to, state, system, and college policies. All Minnesota State and RCTC policies are available through the RCTC website.
Policies include information on such things as:
- Acceptable Use of Computers and Information Technology Resources
- Fraudulent or Other Dishonest Acts
- Student Complaint
- Reports/Complaint of Discrimination/Harassment Investigation and Resolution
- Satisfactory Progress (Academic and Financial Aid)
- Weather/Emergency Closings
Most recently, the following policies were created or updated: Student Data Practices, Financial Aid Satisfactory Progress, and Return to Title IV Refund.
To find a policy, go to http://www.rctc.edu/policies/, type a keyword to search or choose from the list of categories provided. The website is intended to function as a convenient reference. Although the site is updated regularly, it is impossible to guarantee complete accuracy at all times. In the event of any discrepancy between the policy documents formally approved and the policies listed on the website, the former shall be the governing version.

Every student from time to time needs some assistance with academics. Whether you’re looking for some help in a math course or you need advice about what courses to take to get your degree, RCTC provides services that assist students in achieving their educational, career, and personal goals through a variety of services and programs!
Location: Main Campus, SS133 within the Counseling Center.
The Career Center library is updated on an ongoing basis. In addition to several career exploration inventories, we also offer Discover, a computer career investigation program. The Career Library includes 4-year university guides, transfer guides, many college and university catalogs, personal self-help material and other career resources. To access the career information, please make an appointment with a counselor, or stop in to browse or take advantage of a walk-in visit with a counselor or transfer specialist. Computer Lab Services
Instructional computer labs are available to RCTC students using PC and Macintosh computers. In addition, computers are available for student use in the Library Technology Center (LTC) at the main campus and Student Support Services Program at Heintz Center. All students pay a per credit technology fee which entitles access to work in any of the RCTC Computer Labs or the LTC. Without a valid student ID, a fee per day will be assessed to use RCTC computer facilities. You may be asked to display your student ID when using computers. If while using a computer lab you find something not working, notify the lab assistant or the Technology Support Center at (507) 536-5555 or via e-mail at email@example.com.
Counseling and Advising Center
Location: Main Campus, SS133.
At RCTC, counselors and academic advisors are available to assist you in making the learning experience at RCTC a positive one. Every student is assigned an academic advisor or counselor who is here to support students in their educational growth and guide them through program requirements.
A Counselor is a licensed and nationally certified career counselor who is experienced in assisting students with academic and career planning, transitioning and adjusting to college, goal setting, special accommodations, selecting classes to take, deciding on a major, choosing a career, choosing the right RCTC degree, getting help for academic problems, graduation checks, and locating additional help for other concerns. Counselors also provide services to assist with family and personal relationship concerns and provide referrals to community agencies.

- Help students with life problems through counseling

An Academic Advisor specializes in matters pertaining to your educational program and focuses on academic decisions. An Academic Advisor can help you with: interpreting test scores, selecting classes to take, schedule planning, getting help for academic problems, graduation checks, and locating additional help for other concerns.
RCTC Academic Advisors are here to:
- Help you understand your Degree Audit Report (DARS)
- Facilitate decision making on educational and career goals
- Help you determine classes needed for degree, diploma or certificate programs and requirements
- Coordinate admission into special programs
- Facilitate educational transactions; e.g., schedules, drop/adds, withdrawals, change of major, waivers, graduation requirements, etc.
- Clarify policies, procedures and requirements
- Provide general information on special services including academic remediation, admission, placement testing, courses of study, registration, and academic probation and suspension
- Interpret placement scores and recommend appropriate classes.
Your assigned counselor or academic advisor appears on your schedule and on your Degree Audit Report (DARS). Students should work closely with their counselor or academic advisor to develop an academic action plan so their educational goals are met. Careful planning is essential when assisting students in completion of a diploma or degree, transfer to a four-year college, and/or enrolling in courses for enrichment. It is very important to meet with your academic advisor or counselor each semester to ensure that you receive ongoing advice regarding satisfactory academic and career progress. Additionally, if you are planning significant changes in your program, contact your counselor or academic advisor.
When possible, it is helpful to plan your visit to the Counseling and Advising Center by calling (507) 285-7260 to schedule an appointment. Students can utilize the daily walk-in schedule which does not require an appointment but may limit the time available. Please bring a recent DARS and any program guide information you have used in the past when meeting with your counselor or academic advisor. Also, consider writing down the questions that you have so that you can get all of them answered! We recommend that you keep a binder/folder of your program information and bring this each time you meet with your advisor.

In addition, the website has information on career options in Health Care, information on crisis intervention, choosing majors, Placement Test (for math and English) practice resources and an anonymous depression and addiction screening survey as well as other helpful information. Disability Support Services
Location: Main campus, SS176
DSS offers support for disabled students. Services include pre-admission interviews, assistance with application and registration procedures; career and academic advising; auxiliary aids and adaptive equipment; special testing arrangements; advocacy; accessibility information; and referrals to community agencies. It is the responsibility of the individual disabled student to let his/her needs be known to the Disabilities Office. The college will provide reasonable accommodation within the provisions set down in section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990(ADA). Goddard Library acquires and maintains a balanced and up to date collection of print and electronic resources. Many library resources are available online with access from the student’s home or workplace. Also located within the library are wireless laptop networks, a 100-station open computer lab, individual and group study spaces, and librarians to assist with your research. Library staff and facilities are available from 7:30am-9:00pm Monday-Thursday, 7:30am-4:30pm Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm Saturday, and 1:00pm-5:00pm Sunday. Holiday, semester break, and summer hours vary. GPS (GOALS + PLANNING = SUCCESS)
A great source for information and answers to many questions is the GPS LifePlan. Students and parents can access this at www.gpslifeplan.org/rctc/ and can find helpful information on a wide range of topics including career, finance, leadership and other self-help topics. This is a free service for all students and is meant as a first stop for help. If your questions go beyond what is offered on the GPS LifePlan site, you are always welcome to make an appointment with your advisor and/or counselor.
International Student Services
International Student Services includes information on visa and immigration regulations, assistance in the enrollment process, orientation to RCTC and the Rochester community, and academic advising. A resident tuition scholarship is available for those students willing to share their home culture with RCTC and the Rochester community. Learn more at the International Student Services website at:

Overwhelmed and don’t know where to turn?? The Learning Center is meant to help students at all ability levels and educational levels – whether you are at the top of the class or barely passing. Put up the red cup and a tutor will help you, leave it green and you will be left alone to work on homework. MATH help in building the skills and confidence you need to be successful in entry-level through upper-division math and statistics courses. SCIENCE help is available in biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, or microbiology. Students also have access to science models, specimens, and equipment to augment laboratory studies. WRITING one-on-one help with an accomplished writer or coach for students of all writing levels in any classes, even creative writing. COMPUTER APPLICATIONS One-on-one help with a tutor who can help in most areas of computers, from Microsoft Office, BTEC, to more complex programs. ACCOUNTING Help for any student struggling with accounting concepts from entry-level through upper-division courses. READING guidance for any student trying to make sense of difficult reading assignments, whether it’s an essay or a textbook chapter. ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS help in all areas for English Language Learner students with opportunity to develop writing and language skills in a one-on-one setting. So, if you are a non-native speaker of English, take advantage of the help that we have to offer. SPEECH Help in all areas of public speaking including outlining, both verbal and nonverbal delivery, citing sources orally, as well as interviewing skills. SPANISH Practice your Spanish with impromptu conversation or work on homework. There is also an online service offered, independent of D2L, for both online classes and traditional face-to-face classes. DROP-IN TUTORING Drop-in tutoring also has various hours in various disciplines. Check out the drop-in hours at .
Student survey data shows that 97% of students surveyed believe that their grades were improved by using the Learning Center and 98% said they would recommend the Learning Center to a friend. Student Support Services/TRiO (SSS)
Location: Main campus, SS159
Student Support Services provides academic advising, transfer planning, career information, workshops, cultural activities, and one-to-one peer tutoring to eligible students. To be eligible for services, students must meet one of the following criteria: first-generation college student, low-income status or documented disability. Contact (507) 285-7230.
Supplemental/Career & Technical Education Services
Supplemental/Career and Technical Education Services are available to students in career and technical programs at no cost. Services include academic advising; referrals to educational tutors; assistance in program advising; time management; balancing the responsibilities of home, school and employment; referrals to community services; career and occupational information. - Learning Center: We offer a joint RCTC-WSU Learning Center where students can go for tutoring. It provides assistance in both beginning courses such as developmental writing and advanced courses such as advanced calculus. Students who make regular use of the CLC earn significantly better grades than those who do not.
- Tutoring Services: Drop-in peer tutoring is available to all students in a variety of subjects. Drop-in tutoring is located on the main campus and Heintz Center. Contact the tutor coordinator at (507) 280-5534.
