STUDENT SUCCESS DAY – TOMORROW
Student Success Day (SSD) is an opportunity to connect with friends, faculty and staff while attending sessions designed to help you succeed at RCTC and beyond! Mark your calendars; Student Success Day returns TOMORROW! Don’t miss this FREE one-day event designed just for you! All activities will take place on Main Campus and the Sports Center Field House.
BLACK HISTORY EVENTS
Bring your class! Read aloud from a passage of your favorite writings from an African or African American author. Invite students, someone that you know from the community, faculty and staff at RCTC – all can participate. The readings for should be less than five minutes. Days and times are Monday, Feb 10th and Thursday, Feb 13th from 9:30am – 12:30pm in the Reading Lounge of the RCTC Goddard Library. President Boyd will be our opening speaker/reader for Monday, February 10th at 9:30am. For more information on this nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature:

What books are good to read?
It’s a sign of the success of programs like the African American Read-In and other campaigns to support diverse authors that the answer to this question is slowly growing each year. Here are some booklists from previous years that might spark your interest, but these are by no means comprehensive.
One important note to consider: the African American Read-In was started specifically to create a bigger audience for African American authors. So, in the spirit of supporting this core mission, these booklists do not include texts that feature African American characters but that are written by African American authors.
- NCTE Children’s Book Award–Winning Titles for the African American Read-In
- 2020 AARI Recommendations
- Book Recommendations for the African American Read-In
- NCTE Convention Attendees’ Favorites
- NCTE Publications Written by African American Authors
- AARI Frequently Read Books
- Supplemental List for Young Adults and Adults
- Supplemental List for Young Children
- The Farrell J. Chiles Collection
What do you do at this African and African American Read-In?
- Texts written by African or African American authors are shared.
- Participants either listen to or provide the readings.
FAILURE FOR NON-ATTENDANCE (FN) AND FAILURE TO WITHDRAW (FW)
Instructors may assign students the grades of FN and FW. The grade designations are for students who never attend a class and students who stop attending a class during the semester but do not officially withdraw. These grades carry the same weight as a failing grade (F). Withdrawals from courses where students were assigned an FN or FW cannot be made using the eServices site. If students are assigned an FN or FW grade prior to the end of the withdraw date for a course, they can still elect to withdraw but must do so in person at the Records and Registration Office.
EDUCATION PLANNING TOOLS
Remember to use these very valuable tools to assist you and your advisor/counselor in schedule planning for accurate and timely degree completion at RCTC:
- DARS audits viewed through the eServices site
- Find detailed information on what DARS is and how to understand what it all means on the DARS webpage
- Course Transfer System
SPRING AND SUMMER GRADUATES
Graduation applications are due within the first 30 days of the semester you intend on completing program requirements. The Spring 2020 Graduation Application Deadline is February 26, 2020 and Summer 2020 Graduation Application Deadline is March 23, 2020. You can find the Graduation application online. Accurate and complete DARS Audits must be attached to the application. You can access your DARS Audit through the eServices site.
STUDENT LIFE
The RCTC Student Life program gives students the opportunity to expand their education beyond the traditional classroom. Students who get involved in extracurricular activities tend to do better in the classroom than those who don’t get involved. Major employers across the nation look for “leadership skills” in prospective hires and being involved with RCTC’s chartered student organizations will give you the opportunity to gain these skills first hand. In a two-year college, many of the students involved in an activity graduate each year. This means that the opportunity for a freshman to immediately become active is much greater than in a four-year college.
RCTC students can attend sporting events, concerts and theatre productions free of charge. All RCTC sponsored events are alcohol and drug free.
Check out what is going on with Student Life. For further information on student activities, contact the Student Life Coordinator, email: studentlife@rctc.edu or call (507) 285-7206.
