RCTC’s Workplace Communication Program Offered Completely Online
Rochester Community and Technical College will be offering a Workplace Communication certificate completely online starting fall semester 2016. This program consists of the following coursework: Interpersonal Communications; Team/Small Group Communications; and Intercultural Communications or Public Speaking.
According to a comprehensive iSeek 2012 study (partnership of MN employers and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities), Minnesota employers are looking for, but not finding, communication training in the following areas: interpersonal communication skills, team/group communication skills, conflict management skills, presentation skills, and interviewing skills.
Giving students the option to complete this certificate online provides greater opportunity for people to obtain this degree, said Annie Clement, RCTC Communication Studies Instructor. We feel this is a strong option for those who are trying to move ahead in their careers while learning valuable communication skills such as team work, communicating nondefensively and conflict management.
Based on the iSeek study and Rochester’s Workforce 2020 Profile of a World-Class, College/Career Ready Graduate in Rochester, MN, RCTC created both a Workplace Communication certificate and a Communications Studies certificate. These programs help students to increase their skills and abilities in communication and can be completed in a traditional classroom or online. The classes utilize active learning with a skill-based curriculum using real world scenarios and activities. The student-centered approach is one of the reasons RCTC has high rates of student success in its classes, even though a class such as public speaking is listed as a top fear for most people.
