{"id":1948,"date":"2017-10-15T12:39:39","date_gmt":"2017-10-15T17:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rctc.edu\/echo\/?p=1948"},"modified":"2018-10-31T19:46:09","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T19:46:09","slug":"rctc-receives-two-ibm-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rctc.edu\/echo\/rctc-receives-two-ibm-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"RCTC receives two IBM grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><b>Echo<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>staff<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>report<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">RCTC has received two grants from IBM to support its physics and chemistry departments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">These grants are<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>given in recognition of the volunteer service of retired IBM engineers, Eric Skuldt (physics and engineering and Bruce Keller (chemistry). <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The first $2,000 cash grant will support RCTC\u2019s Physics and Engineering departments through the purchase of equipment to expand the laboratory facilities and student engineering projects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>second<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>$2,000<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>grant<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>will<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>be<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>used<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>support<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>RCTC\u2019s<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>chemistry<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>research<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>program. The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>Chemistry<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>Department<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>will<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>purchase<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>a comparison<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>microscope<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>be used<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>in a forensics<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>chemistry<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>course. Upgrades will also be made to the department\u2019s infrared instrumentation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The cash awards are part of IBM\u2019s community grants program. An IBM retiree who has a designated number of volunteer hours with an organization can write and submit a grant request.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">A group of retired engineers, the Kiwanis Day Makers \u201cMad Scientists,\u201d comprised primarily of IBM retirees, initiated these two grants.
