This dental care is available, thanks to RCTC\u2019s dental hygiene clinic, which is staffed by the students and faculty of the Dental Hygiene program. Since 1992, the clinic has offered a range of preventative dental care, including dental cleanings, X-rays, sealants, and more. Access to this care is open to everyone: students, family members, community members, and even children.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe answer to who can come is anyone,\u201d said Anne High, director of the Dental Hygiene program. \u201cWe accept all forms of insurances and reimbursements, and even if someone doesn\u2019t have insurance, care is available. Our fees are definitely reduced from dental offices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The clinic, located at the Heintz Center campus, is open from 12:30-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through February. For appointments or more information, call 507-280-3169. <\/span><\/p>\n Clinical experience is a significant part of the Dental Hygiene curriculum, giving students a chance to get hands on experience in the field under the guidance of program faculty and a supervising dentist. Current students in the program related their appreciation for this opportunity to test their skills in a variety of different situations.<\/span><\/p>\n Submitted photo \u201cYou would never want your dental hygienist to say, Oh, I\u2019ve never done this before,\u201d joked Liz Krohe, a Dental Hygiene student of two years. \u201cThey have to learn somewhere. The clinic does a very good job of rounding out curriculum here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Because of the variety of basic dental services offered, students see patients needing treatments in varying levels of difficulty and are able to apply information from the classroom in real-world scenarios.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn the long run, it helps us to be more experienced and prepared for the real world,\u201d said Eunice Russell, another Dental Hygiene student completing her second year in the program.<\/span><\/p>\n In addition to serving those who may not have access to regular dental care, the clinic functions as an educator for patients.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re the point where they learn about the value of preventative care,\u201d High said. \u201cWe see a lot of people who may never have seen a dentist or had what we call a dental home, which means they don\u2019t have a regular dentist they see for dental care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Russell agreed, adding that because one demographic the clinic often serves is immigrants, \u201cIt can be the first time they\u2019ve had their teeth cleaned. If they\u2019re from ethnicities or countries where they didn\u2019t have access to dental care or where the standards weren\u2019t as high, it\u2019s all new to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Russell, who is from the Bahamas, is able to add personal perspective on the impact of this difference in dental standards. Because of her own experiences going to the dentist as a child, she now has a passion to help others understand the importance of dental hygiene. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI just want to help people not go through what I did,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n Submitted photo She feels fortunate to have been accepted into RCTC\u2019s highly competitive program, which enrolls only 16 students yearly. Her hope is to return to the Bahamas after graduating with her associate\u2019s degree in the spring to help educate about the benefits of better technology and higher standards of care. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBoth are much better here,\u201d she explained. \u201cEducation would benefit people here and people back home as well.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n Krohe\u2019s journey to dental hygiene was fueled by a similar desire to help people improve their health. Originally a nursing student, she\u2019s worked in fields caring for people for 10 years. She came to RCTC intending to apply to one of the Mayo health programs, but when someone showed her the dental hygiene program, her plans quickly changed.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s more family oriented than nursing, and that interested me,\u201d she explained. \u201cNow I\u2019ve fallen in love with it. I love cleaning peoples\u2019 teeth, teaching them about dental hygiene, and teeth are just very interesting to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Krohe will graduate with her associate\u2019s degree in the spring and plans to study online for a bachelor\u2019s degree in Dental Hygiene from Metropolitan State through the new dual enrollment arrangement with RCTC. After that, she\u2019ll complete an online master\u2019s in Dental Therapy. In the meantime, she intends to put her skills to work at a dental office and start helping people right away.<\/span><\/p>\n Both agreed that the integration of clinical experience as part of the program\u2019s curriculum solidified their dedication to this career path.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt was that moment of deciding, Do I like this or not?'\u201d Krohe said of the clinical experience. \u201cYou have to have a feel for it to know that\u2019s what you really want to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By Lydia Hansen Editor in Chief Did you know you can get your teeth cleaned right here on campus?
