On Dec. 2, RCTC\u2019s creative writing club held their first public reading. Called \u201cPieces of Our Lives,\u201d it featured essays, poems and short stories written by club members during the semester.<\/p>\n

Munira Alimire\u2019s essay \u201cMemories of Not Belonging\u201d told her story of growing up an outsider in her own community, while Isaac Sindt\u2019s poem \u201cWe Are Human\u201d recognized the importance of understanding that as humans, our similarities are greater than any individual differences. Ilhan Raage reaffirmed this in her poem \u201cStronger Than Our Fear\u201d with the powerful line \u201cWe lose the best things when we are too afraid \/ to fight back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lydia Hansen followed this with her poem \u201cArrows,\u201d which was about being free to make her own choices. Sydney Holets also performed a poem called \u201cHome For My Heart\u201d where she talked about personal pain and growing to a brighter future.<\/p>\n

This was followed by John Gregory\u2019s short story \u201cTime Management\u201d which reflected what it takes to make someone break the rules. Joshua Robertson\u2019s poem \u201cI Suppose I Just Miss Her\u201d revolved around the loss of a close friendship and the importance of never letting go of those you love.<\/p>\n

The event closed with Ari Bailey\u2019s story \u201cGirlfriend\u201d about a woman afraid of losing the person she loves best.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really enjoyed hearing these stories,\u201d said one of the guests in attendance, \u201cThey were so very powerful and meaningful. They really do capture the essence of what it means to be a student at RCTC.\u201d<\/p>\n
