The Charles E. Gagnon Museum and Sculpture Garden is presenting its first exhibition, Lipchitz in the Gagnon Museum, which runs Dec. 8 through March 16.<\/p>\n
This exhibition features a portfolio of 20 drawings prompted by Jacques Lipchitz\u2019s experiences as a Jewish artist in Nazi-occupied France. Lipchitz was an influential sculptor who co-founded the Cubism movement with Pablo Picasso<\/p>\n
In 1941, Lipchitz escaped to America aided by the Museum of Modern Art bringing with him only two items: the portfolio of 20 drawings and his sculpture, Benediction<\/i>. While living in New York, Lipchitz and Gagnon formed a close friendship built upon their mutual dedication of expression and of recording history. The classical art and Greek mythology themes as applied to 20th century events provide a new perspective on history.<\/p>\n
The museum encourages visitors to go to its website, www.gagnonmuseum.org, to schedule a tour of the permanent collection of Gagnon and the Lipschitz exhibition. The mentor-student relationship shared by Lipchitz and Gagnon supports the museum\u2019s mission in providing an educational opportunity. Students are offered a reduced admission fee of $5 for this exhibition.<\/p>\n
