Course Description

This course is an introductory exposure to art and to ideas about art and its creation. We will discuss the nature of art, explore the elements of art and principle of design, study a variety of art media and techniques, and examine major monuments and works of art from prehistoric through contemporary times. There will be a museum activity.

The student will be able to:

  1. Describe the elements of art and principles of design in art works.
  2. Compare and contrast works of art from similar and different cultural traditions
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of some of the ways in which cultural, economic, religious, and historical conditions/events affect the development of the visual arts.
  4. Articulate an informed personal reaction to artworks.
