Course Description
This course is designed to continue the student’s education in the basic clinical theory, functions and procedures necessary for comprehensive patient treatment with an emphasis on primary preventive measures, clinical dental hygiene skills and management of medical emergencies.

The student will be able to:
- Explain the development of dental caries.
- Introduction to risk assessment of dental diseases.
- Differentiate among various types of dental caries.
- Describe the different topical and systemic fluoride delivery systems.
- Determine which professionally applied and patient applied fluoride products should be treatment planned for each patient based on patient need.
- Identify components of basic dental hygiene treatment plan.
- Integrate theoretical principles of dental hygiene with their clinical application.
- Identify auxiliary plaque control aids as they apply to specific patient conditions.
- Differentiate among therapeutic ingredients contained in dentifrices.
- Explain the role of chemotherapeutic agents in the treatment and maintenance of periodontal disease.
- Explain the methods used to care for removable and fixed dental appliances.
- Effectively manage medical emergency situations that may occur in a dental office.
- Explain the mechanism of action of the ultrasonic scaler.
- Describe the pros and cons of using the ultrasonic scaler.
