Course Description

This course is a continuation of Dental Hygiene Practice I introducing the student to basic clinical theory, functions, and procedures necessary for comprehensive patient treatment. Students will continue practice on student partners until all basic competencies are satisfied and will then begin treating patients in the clinical setting.

Learning Outcomes (General)

The student will be able to:

1. Simulate medical and dental conditions, which could lead to emergency situations.
2. Develop a basic dental hygiene treatment plan.
3. Demonstrate the use of basic and auxiliary plaque control agents.
4. Perform a baseline periodontal assessment on a student partner.
5. Increase measured proficiency in comprehensive dental hygiene treatment for AAP Type I and II patients.
6. Perform dental charting on student partners and clinic patients.
7. Apply the CDC standards for infection control in the dental setting.
8. Perform a comprehensive patient assessment.
9. Apply the principles of basic periodontal instrumentation on student partners and clinic patients.
10. Perform selective polishing and topical fluoride treatments on student partners and clinic patients.
11. Integrate theoretical concepts with practical application skills.
12. Evaluate and sharpen instruments as necessary.
13. Demonstrate the use of medical/dental references when assessing a patient’s medical history.
14. Increase measured proficiency in comprehensive dental hygiene treatment for Healthy/Class I and Class II maintenance clinic patients.
15. Manage the treatment of medical/dental emergencies with rational processes.
16. Integrate patient health history and special needs into their treatment plan.
17. Display respect and compassion when dealing with patients.
18. Demonstrate proper responses to various medical/dental emergencies.
19. Discover the special needs of medically compromised patients.
20. Demonstrate use of ultrasonic scaler on supragingival calculus removal.
21. Treatment plan and expose radiographs/images on clinic patients.
22. Understand the roles, responsibilities, and values of their own profession as well as those of other collaborating professions.
