Course Description
This course is an introduction to the principles of general pathology and oral pathology, focusing on etiology, progression, clinical manifestations and treatment of pathologic conditions. The basic inflammatory and immune responses as they relate to the human body are reviewed. The course will focus on the fundamental disease processes involving the maxillofacial region. Emphasis is placed on early recognition and documentation of abnormal oral conditions.

Learning Outcomes (General)
The student will be able to:
- Describe the cellular mechanism of inflammation, neoplasia, and wound healing.
- Recognize the influence of the immune system on inflammation, neoplasia and wound healing.
- Describe the process by which cellular disease mechanisms affect specific body organ systems.
- Identify the clinical manifestations of the mechanisms of inflammation, neoplasia, wound healing, and other conditions of the head and neck region.
- Describe the clinical manifestations of the mechanisms of inflammation, neoplasia, wound healing, and other conditions of the head and neck region.
- Distinguish among groups of symptoms such as reactive, neoplastic, infectious and developmental.
- Assess clinical signs and symptoms to a level that allows a differential diagnosis.
- Correlate the signs and symptoms of oral abnormalities with etiologic factors.
- Describe common oral lesions.
- Identify risk factors for oral pathologies.
- Apply risk assessment tools for oral pathologies.
- Determine whether referral for definitive diagnosis is needed.
- Discuss clinical manifestations of disease with dental faculty, clients, and other health professionals.
