Course Description
This course is an examination of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease. Emphasis will include the progression of periodontal disease, diagnostic methods, treatment modalities, and the role of the dental hygienist in the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease.

The student will be able to:
- Identify causative factors of periodontal disease.
- Integrate the microbiologic, genetic, local, and systemic factors responsible for periodontal disease.
- Apply knowledge to early detection and treatment of periodontal disease.
- Differentiate among gingival and periodontal diseases.
- Recognize systemic factors influencing periodontal disease.
- Identify periodontal emergencies.
- Assume the role of the dental hygienists in nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
- Discuss the principles of periodontal surgery.
- Discuss the techniques utilized in periodontal surgery.
- Assume the role of the dental hygienist in periodontal maintenance therapy.
- Discuss the etiology of periodontal disease.
- Discuss the role occlusion plays in etiology of periodontal disease.
- Apply the AAP Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions to disease profiles.
- Differentiate bacteria responsible for various periodontal diseases.
- Discuss prevention and treatment therapies for periodontal diseases.
