Course Description

A continuation of Dental Hygiene Practice II with supervised clinical experience and a weekly seminar. Students will apply basic theories, functions and procedures necessary for comprehensive client treatment.

Learning Outcomes (General)

The student will be able to:

1. Develop a comprehensive dental hygiene treatment plan.
2. Demonstrate the use of basic and auxiliary plaque control agents.
3. Perform periodontal assessment on clinic clients.
4. Develop oral hygiene/education sessions appropriate to client needs.
5. Perform dental charting on clinic clients.
6. Apply the CDC standards for infection control in the dental setting.
7. Perform a comprehensive client assessment.
8. Apply the principles of periodontal instrumentation on clinic clients.
9. Perform selective polishing and topical fluoride treatments on clinic clients.
10. Integrate theoretical concepts with practical application skills.
11. Evaluate and sharpen instruments as necessary.
12. Demonstrate proficiency in obtaining alginate impressions and pour study casts.
13. Increase measured proficiency incomprehensive dental hygiene treatment for Class I, Class II, Class III and Class IV clinic clients.
14. Manage the treatment of medical/dental emergencies with rational processes.
15. Integrate client health history and special needs into their treatment plan.
16. Evaluate and recommend clients for pit and fissure sealants.
17. Evaluate and recommend clients for radiographs, expose radiographs.
18. Demonstrate proficiency in tooth desensitization and sub-gingival irrigation.
19. Demonstrate effective communication strategies that foster mutual respect and understanding among professionals from various disciplines.
20. Analyze the dynamics of interprofessional teams and the importance of shared goals.
21. Recognize ethical issues that may arise in interprofessional collaborations.
22. Apply interprofessional collaboration principles to simulated patient cases.
23. Reflect on individual and team performance in interprofessional collaborations.

Special Information (if any)

Liability Insurance is provided by RCTC. Tuition differential is used for supplies. Uniforms, safety glasses, clinic shoes, and instrument kits. Current healthcare level CPR certification is needed for course. HBV vaccine or waiver and other immunizations is needed for course. Yearly Mantoux test is required for course. Current medical insurance is required.
