Course Description
Early childhood teachers establish warm sensitive relationships with children, communicate positively by creating a sense of belonging and community in the classroom. Early childhood teachers design and establish a learning space that promotes relationships, routines, models empathy for others, and identifies challenging behavior triggers. Students will apply, examine, and study social-emotional development to support children’s overall physical, mental health and wellbeing.

Learning Outcomes (General)
The student will be able to:
- Examine and establish the importance of building relationship-based practice, culturally affirming, and proactive approaches to behavior, and implement these approaches to improve student outcomes and reduce exclusionary practices in an educational setting.
- Examine social and emotional development of children birth – 8.
- Establish a psychologically safe and healthy learning environment, routines, and transitions.
- Plan, design, and implement developmentally appropriate experiences that support children’s construction of social knowledge.
- Use communication skills that promote children’s social emotional development.
- Identify the impact of stress, trauma, and resilience on positive mental health.
- Build trusting relationships with children and peers that meeting their needs for security, self-esteem, sense of belonging, sense of worth, self-confidence and establishing a sense of community.
