Course Description

Young children approach learning with awe, wonder, enthusiasm, and imagination. They are explorers, investigators, inventors, risk takers, and creative thinkers. Intentional teachers recognize how children learn, design classrooms, use a variety of teaching methods, use child center practices, model advanced language, and promote critical thinking to be expressed in a variety of ways. Students in this course will identify beautiful learning environments, explore and apply instructional design principles and techniques, that support hands on learning through play and project-based learning instruction based on children’s interests and abilities.

Learning Outcomes (General)

The student will be able to:

  1. Examine the relationship between motivation and engagement and design learning experiences using strategies that build student self-direction and ownership of learning.
  2. Explore and apply instructional design principles to create innovative digital learning environments that engage and support learning.
  3. Implement instructional approaches that integrate real-world learning opportunities, including service learning, community-based learning, and project-based learning, into instruction.
  4. Use Minnesota Early Learning standards to identify children’s emerging development and design developmentally appropriate learning environments and experiences.
  5. Create inclusive and equitable environments that recognize the cultural and linguistic diversity of the children served.
  6. Examine the importance of play and multiple ways of facilitating learning through play in the environment.
