Course Description

Children learn to talk, read, and write in the early years. Effective early childhood teachers use the language of learning, select meaningful children’s books, tell stories, provide materials that invite children to experiment with print, and support multilingual learners. This course focuses on language and literacy development with an emphasis on promoting early literacy skills, concepts of print, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Students will develop resources, select materials, set up provocations, and practice strategies that support language and literacy development of young children.

Learning Outcomes (General)

The student will be able to:

  1. Review oral and written language development.
  2. Describe the development of the home language and of English in dual language learners.
  3. Observe and assess children’s emerging language and literacy development.
  4. Examine multi-sensory, constructivist approaches and methods that encourage children’s language and literacy development.
  5. Plan, design, and implement a variety of developmentally appropriate learning experiences that support oral language, listening, letter recognition, alphabetic principles, phonological awareness, rhyme and alliteration, print concepts, and reading.
  6. Plan, design, and implement a variety of developmentally appropriate learning experiences that promote dual language development.
  7. Practice evidence-based best practices reading strategies that improve comprehension.
  8. Review a wide range of high-quality engaging texts from various genres and cultures.
  9. Analyze how technology and digital media support language and literacy development and English language learners.
  10. Provide support that encourages and motivates families to promote language and literacy in the home.
