Course Description
The Emergency Medical Responder course follows the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards curriculum. This course is the core training for First Responder personnel. The topics covered include anatomy and physiology, airway management, cardiac emergencies, medical emergencies, trauma emergencies, NIMS (Incident Command), and the special populations (OB/GYN, Pediatrics, and Geriatrics.). Upon successful completion of the course, participants are eligible to test the National Registry of Emergency Medical Responder’s Psychomotor and Cognitive Exams. Successful completion of the course will allow students to become credentialed by the State of Minnesota’s Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board as licensed Emergency Medical Responder.

Learning Outcomes (General)
The student will be able to:
- Explain the role of the EMR within the Emergency Medical Services system; including legal and ethical issues.
- Identify and describe basic human anatomy and physiology and perform physical assessments.
- Define and describe the basic disease management noting emergent treatments.
- Perform complete and thorough patient assessments and perform appropriate treatments for cardiac, medical, and trauma emergencies.
- Identify and apply basic pharmacology in treating and understanding medical emergencies.
- Understand basic EMS operations, EMR safety; personal and scene and multiple-casualty/ hazard materials incidents.

Methods for Evaluation of Student Learning
Methods may include but are not limited to:
- The participant will be evaluated by the instructor in skill performance portions of the class using the current standards of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Responder’s Psychomotor Examination standards.
- Curriculum and written examinations throughout the course.
- Specific outcome assessments as noted on the syllabus.

Special Information (if any)
Students will become certified in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (2020 Curriculum). Students are eligible for Minnesota State Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board certification. This course meets requirements for Minnesota Board of Peace Officer’s Standards and Training (POST) with or without State of Minnesota EMSRB EMR credentialling.
