Course Description
The Emergency Medical Technician course follows the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards curriculum. This course is the base training for ambulance personnel. The topics covered include anatomy and physiology, airway management, cardiac emergencies, medical emergencies, trauma emergencies, NIMS (Incident Command), and the special populations (OB/GYN, Pediatrics, and Geriatrics.). Upon successful completion of the course, participants are eligible to test the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Psychomotor and Cognitive Exams.

Learning Outcomes (General)
The student will be able to:
- Explain the role of the EMT within the EMS system; including legal and ethical issues.
- Identify and describe basic human anatomy and physiology and perform physical assessments.
- Define and describe the basic pathophysiology of multiple diseases noting emergent treatments.
- Perform complete and thorough patient assessments and perform appropriate treatments for cardiac, medical, and trauma emergencies.
- Identify, describe, and apply basic pharmacology in treating and understanding medical emergencies.
- Understand basic ambulance operations, EMT safety; personal and scene and multiple casualty/hazard materials incidents.

Methods for Evaluation of Student Learning
Methods may include but are not limited to:
- The participant will be evaluated by the instructor in skill performance portions of the class using the current standards of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Psychomotor Examination standards.
- Curriculum and written examinations throughout the course.
- Specific outcome assessments as noted on the syllabus.

Special Information (if any)
Field experiences will be conducted with Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service for ten patient assessments. “FISDAP: Online Tools for EMS” training tool is utilized to track Clinical skills, Lab skills, and Field Shifts.
