Course Description

This course develops an understanding of the clinical knowledge base covering various areas of medical practice, provides fundamental information about normal body function, major disease conditions affecting all the major body systems and medications commonly used for those diseases. Focus will be to enhance professional communication within the health care environment by being able to associate basic treatment terminology and procedures with common disease conditions and the body system involved.

The student will be able to:

  1. Identify body function and organizational terms.
  2. Explain the mechanism of disease.
  3. Describe normal function, diseases, basic medications and treatment modalities including surgical intervention and diagnostic testing for disease processing in the following twelve body systems: Lymphatic/Circulatory, Special Senses, Endocrine, Digestive, Urinary, Reproductive, Nervous, Skeletal, Muscular, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, and Integumentary.
  4. Articulate the terminology and purpose of the following medical specialties: Oncology, Psychiatry, and Radiology.
  5. Apply medical terminology, diagnostic procedures, and the medications, treatment modalities pertaining to diseases, injuries, and abnormalities of the human body
