Course Description

This course is designed to prepare students to respond appropriately and with confidence in an emergency situation until more advanced help arrives. Instruction will include discussion, lecture, demonstration, video scenarios and practice. The course includes certification in American Red Cross - Responding to Emergencies CPR/AED and First Aid. After successfully completing all components of the class, students may receive the American Red Cross certification. A fee is required for certification.

Learning Outcomes (General)

The student will be able to:

  1. Explain how the EMS system works and the role of the lay responder in this system.
  2. Identify and apply guidelines to follow to ensure personal safety and the safety of others at an emergency scene.
  3. Recognize breathing emergencies and provide proper care for them.
  4. Explain the Cardiac Chain of Survival for both adults and children.
  5. Recognize the signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest, and demonstrate how to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  6. Identify an AED and demonstrate how to use one.
  7. Demonstrate proper care for soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries.
  8. Recognize and treat sudden illness situations.
  9. Apply safe techniques for moving a person from a dangerous situation.
