Course Description

The management of high quality turf requires specialized skills. A thorough understanding of turfgrass morphology, environmental adaptation, and cultural requirements are important tools in the management of turfgrass. In this course, an integration of turf maintenance theory and practice will be applied to home lawns and recreational landscapes.

The student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of turfgrass morphology
  2. Identify the seed and plants of turfgrasses species.
  3. Describe the characteristics of cool- and warm-season turfgrass species.
  4. Identify how the components of the environment affect turfgrass growth and development.
  5. Identify soil and water conservation methods used in turfgrass management.
  6. Explain cultural practices used in turfgrass management.
  7. Identify turfgrass pests.
  8. Discuss the components of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan for turfgrass.
  9. Demonstrate the ability to calculate and apply appropriate fertilizer rates.
  10. Demonstrate the ability to calibrate equipment.
  11. Demonstrate the safe use of turfgrass tools, equipment, and supplies.
  12. Propose and assess solutions to environmental problems associated with turfgrass management.
