Course Description

This course explores information gathering methods such as interviewing techniques, screening tools, and assessments commonly used by counselors in the substance use field. A major emphasis of this class will be on the practical application of client evaluation, and the use of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) levels of care, risk ratings, and client placement criteria.

  1. Explore ethical and legal issues of screening and assessment.
  2. Recall substance use and mental health intake and orientation process, procedures, guidelines, and standards.
  3. Examine common mental health disorders.
  4. Describe how case management, formation, and service coordination are used in client evaluation.
  5. Identify risk and protective factors.
  6. Describe developmentally and culturally appropriate assessment.
  7. Practice client information gathering techniques
  8. Examine diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders.
  9. Create a treatment plan.
  10. Utilize ASAM risk and placement guidelines to make accurate recommendations, placements, and/or referrals.
  11. Evaluate overall ability to screen and assess clients with substance use disorders.
