Course Description

This course focuses on developing multicultural awareness and competency as it relates to counseling clients from diverse backgrounds. This course also gives an overview of the counseling skills and techniques necessary to interact with a variety of cultural backgrounds in the addiction counseling field. Emphasis will be placed on the unique treatment needs of individuals from diverse populations and the implementation of consultation and referral when necessary.

Learning Outcomes (General)

The student will be able to:

  1. Analyze how racism impacts a culturally diverse client.
  2. Identify ethical, legal, and multicultural counseling concepts.
  3. Recognize ethical and legal issues related to counseling culturally diverse clients.
  4. Evaluate current ability to counsel clients from diverse backgrounds who have mental and or substance use disorders.
  5. Assess how personal values, assumptions, and bias affect ability to counsel culturally diverse clients.
  6. Develop culturally appropriate counseling skills and theoretical frame.
  7. Describe the unique experiences and needs of a cultural group.
  8. Design educational curriculum on a special population.
  9. Identify factors which shaped a culturally diverse client's world view and influence their willingness to participate in addictions and mental health counseling.
  10. Identify multiculturally appropriate community resources, consultation options, and referral agencies necessary for culturally diverse clients at a national, state, and local level.
  11. Examine the unique treatment needs of individuals and families from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
