Course Description

Students in practicum II will engage in an off-campus field-based experience where they will demonstrate their mastery of academic coursework and the 12-core functions of an alcohol and drug counselor. During this practicum experience students will complete a minimum of 440 hours of clinical practice under the supervision of a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, or other qualified professional. At regularly scheduled seminar meetings students will discuss ethical and professional considerations, boundary setting, interpersonal conflicts, and their engagement in the therapeutic process. Admission to the RCTC Alcohol and Drug Counseling Program or Certificate.

Learning Outcomes (General)

The student will be able to:

1. Exhibit satisfactory trans-disciplinary skill and knowledge as it relates to the 12-core functions of an alcohol and drug counselor.
2. Demonstrate acceptable ethical practice.
3. Display satisfactory legal practice by complying with state and federal licensing statutes, rules, and regulations.
4. Exhibit professional behavior and attitudes by following college and internship site policies and practices.
5. Locate state licensing and testing resources.
6. Complete a minimum of 440 hours of supervised practice.

Special Information (if any)

Students must be admitted to RCTC’s ADC program or certificate, and they must pass a MN background check/ study prior to starting their practicum. Students may not start their practicum until permission has been given to them by their instructor. Students are encouraged to purchase personal liability insurance. Students in practicum II will complete a minimum of 440 hours of supervised addiction counseling practices under a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor or other qualified professional. Students are responsible for finding their own practicum. This class is pass/fail.
